Title: Strategic design of Intermediate Technology devices as social products to overcome extreme poverty conditions in Colombia
Location: Global

Status: In Progress
Timeline: April 19 11 to February 28 12

Description:
What this project aims to achieve is to offer a clean, alternative technology, well-adapted for the rural populations/small farmers on riverside areas to help covering their needs regarding to access to electricity, water for irrigation and ice for food storage. This opportunity will allow them to improve their quality of life, with access to basic services, and with energy at their disposal, for domestic and productive use.

However this will never be possible only by merely building the machine for it can be more than just that: it can be an element for social development, for autonomy, and an oportunity to gather Government, NGOs/Power Companies/manufacturers and riverside villagers around the solution of their needs.

In order to achieve the desired impact described above, we must develop a complete management model composed by: a business scheme, a technological transfer methodology and evaluation model for each specific application: water pumping, electricity generation and mechanical freezing.

Background:
The eastern plains of the Orinoco, the Pacific coast and the Amazonian lowlands in Colombia represent 27%, 7% and 35% of the country, while the lowland of Amazonas in Peru constitutes the 61% of its surface. Despite their significant extensions, holds only about 6% of the population of these countries translated in population densities of less than 5 inhabitants per square kilometer. In these regions, the main communication/trade way is a complex network of rivers.

These conditions limit the possibility of extending electricity grids of the National Interconnected System to these areas due to the high costs involved versus the low electric consumption profile typical of these small towns. Also, predominantly flat landscape and
different layers of vegetation difficult the use of energy solutions based on hydropower or wind power.

This means that most people have no access to public services (water and electricity) for permanent and self reliance power supply is limited to the use of fuel generating plants, on which depend on their pumping and cooling systems if any) depend, carrying out unsustainable costs and intensive use of non-renewable natural resources. An alternative to this lies in thephotovoltaic and thermal solar systems, as expensive as they get for these regions coincide with the lowest solar radiation levels whithin these countries.

The consequences for populations that do not have these systems go far beyond the simple lack of public services as electricity, running water and food refrigeration systems. Since these facilities are not ends in themselves but means to achieve productive and social uses energy such as health, education, use of ICTs and agricultural marketing, so its absence causes a strong delay in all these areas.

These latent needs clearly show that it is necessary to create appropriate means for their solution [b] than those currently available [/ b] as these do not guide these people toward independence, entrepreneurship and sustainability, on the contrary, they generate dependence on foreign resources and technologies with reduced cost-benefit ratio.

Thus, the adaptation of technology based on three fundamental needs and renewable natural resources available to users before the availability of the market, we have developed a tool (The ACUAVATIO) through which to promote competitiveness coastal communities traditionally isolated and vulnerable.

Objectives:
Coordinate a team to jointly develop a strategy for production, commercialization and application of ACUAVATIO in Colombia (initially), based on the steps learned in SPROUT that allows us to put this product on the market in February 2012.

Milestones:
A written document containing the management model from the experience of the first three ACUAVATIO in community facilities, to be held from June 15, 2011 and delivered November 21, 2011 in order to establish clear policies for its implementation.

2. Using cooperative structures and along with the orginal R&D Team for Acuavatio. To build a scheme for evaluation of resources: natural, financial and human resources present to make a community elegible for an Acuavatio. The knowledge generated by the testing phase and knowledge on the installation conditions from members the community to write a management model for physical adequation and technology transfer of the turbine. This form must be completed after completion of the pilot plant stage and follow-up, November 21 2011, the model should be in first draft of October 31, 2011.

Budget:
Upon request

Needs:
We need collaboration of experts, mainly in these areas:

-Community management and benefitiary selection for humanitary relief.
-Business plan building and branding management for social products.
-Economic benefits from rural electrification in extreme poverty conditions.
-Social Entrepreneurship and profitability.
