ARE YOU INTERESTED?
GYCA YOUTH VISIONING:
Are you from an island?
*Youth Visioning for Island Living (YV)* is a capacity building initiative that empowers young people living in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to be able to implement their own sustainable development ideas in their communities. Since 2005, YV have funded 35 youth-led projects (ranging from $US2000-US$4000 each), *five of which focused entirely on HIV/AIDS*, in islands around the world under the concept of "by youth for youth". This meant that from start to finish, a youth leader was responsible for the design, implementation and reporting of their project with assistance from
their youth organisation.
The projects fell under 3 broad themes of:
1) Life and love in islands - island lifestyles and cultures;
2) My island home - safeguarding island environments;
3) Money in my pocket - economic and employment opportunities.
*Starting October 2008, YV will launch a call for proposals* to begin another phase of HIV/AIDS projects. If you have creative and innovative ideas for a project on your island, please write to Michael Tran m.tran@unesco.org .The objectives of YV are:
Create awareness and encourage participation by youth in shaping and advancing the 'Further Implementation of the Programme of Action for the
Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States' (Mauritius Strategy);
Develop educational resources to increase the ability of young people to be able to implement their own sustainable development projects;
Create partnerships with youth organisations to increase awareness of the initiative as well as to provide greater support for the implementation of
youth led projects;
Facilitate the implementation of youth proposals for sustainable island living;
Encourage young islanders to work together especially inter-regionally.
For further information and to see what island youth around the world are doing in the framework of YV, please go to www.youthvisioning.org
