Title: Help Elephants And People To Live Peacefully Together
Location:
Global
Categories: Environment
Status:
In Progress
Timeline:
November 1 11 to December 15 11
Description:
I\\\'m trying to raise money to study the endangered Asian elephant in Sri Lanka and provide employment for one young person in who is going to make a difference for elephant conservation.
Background:
The Uda Walawe Elephant Research Project is the first-ever long-term study of Asian elephants in the wild. Asian elephants are classified as ‘endangered’ under the IUCN Red List, with their number one threat being loss of habitat. This is especially acute in the island nation of Sri Lanka, where elephants are increasingly in conflict with the growing human population. Each year elephants and people are killed as a result.
This work started as my doctoral research, with just me and one field assistant. We follow the lives of close to six hundred Asian elephants, many of whom the two of us have learned to identify as individuals using photographs of their distinctive floppy ears. Now I need your help to take this work even further which is why we\\\'re taking part in the #SciFund challenge!
Objectives:
Our aim is to study how farmers and elephants interact so we can find ways of avoiding conflict. To do this, we need local staff.
We have until December 15th to raise $7,000 which is equal to several years of salary for field staff! Why is this important? Long-term job security is vital for creating a knowledgeable person who can be a local conservationist. You can\\\'t help elephants without having experienced and committed people on the ground.
Milestones:
$1,200: One year\\\'s salary
$2,400: Two years salary.
$3,000: Two years salary plus savings to plan for the future.
$4,000: Three years salary, savings, and additional educational training.
$7,000: Five years salary, savings, better training, pay raises over time, and a good start toward long-term sustainability.
Budget:
$7,000 - this is the target to meet by December 15th.
Needs:
Your help!! If you have a club, social group, or just a couple of friends who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of elephants and people, start a fundraiser to help us meet our goal!
I\\\'ve created this as a resource for people to communicate and coordinate. GET INVOLVED!
