Timeline: Ongoing

Description:
BAYTUNA is an initiative that aims at Improving, Strengthening, and Empowering women and the situation of women in Lebanon. BAYTUNA is a students initiative that aims at improving the quality of living of underprivileged women in Lebanon.

Available studies on poverty in Lebanon reveal that poverty is most acute amongst:
1. Big Households characterized by high drop-out rates and child labor;
2. Female headed households;
3. Disabled and their households;
4. Elderly living alone, working children (and their households); and
5. Households of prisoners.

Since our main target is poor women in Lebanon, we will be choosing families that are essentially female-headed, and another one or more of the conditions mentioned above.

Background:
Poverty is still a serious problem in Lebanon, despite some apparent improvements in the last decade. The Lebanese war had an enormous impact on the economy, which deteriorated, thus further widening the poverty gap. The end of the military war, however, brought no improvements to the situation; the economic recession persisted and the country’s public debt continued to accumulate. While poverty data in Lebanon are not very accurate, various estimates draw the extreme poverty line at 5% of the population, while estimates for relative poverty are around 25% of the total population.
The situation only worsened with the latest political developments and instability, and it all started with the assassination of Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, which brought with it many political discontent and governmental paralysis. The July War of 2006, the Nahr El Bared War of 2007, and the May Chaos of 2008, with many continuous internal conflicts, and the most recent global financial crisis, followed this major turning point event, and as a result, attracted the concentration of governmental official away from focusing on economic development to engaging in political conflict.
In 2009, the state of poverty is worse than ever. The rural areas of Lebanon continue to deteriorate. And the result of all of this continues to hit women the most.

Objectives:
Our goal is the battle against poverty, but more accurately the fight against the new dubbed term "the feminization of poverty".
The agenda is to empower these women to end discrimination, and feed them confidence and education to overcome the obstacles that these women bare. Studies show that when women are supported and empowered, all of society benefits. Their families are healthier, more children go to school, agricultural productivity improves and incomes increase. In short, communities become more resilient.

In order to achieve these objectives, it is essential to:
1. Provide these underprivileged women with clean, renovated, and healthy home and environment which as a result improves their overall standard of living;
2. Encourage women to work for themselves by providing access to easy loan facilities;
3. Organize vocational training courses for women in order to develop their capacities and enable them to enter the job market;
4. Widen the scope for women's participation in occupational and labor unions with a view to defending their rights.
.

Milestones:
It expected to renovate at least one house per month.
