Business Labs is an integrated young entrepreneur training and development program created by the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) and the Organization of American States (OAS) in cooperation with the Mount Carmel International Training Center (MCTC) of Israel, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and local organizations in the countries that want to implement the model. The program emphasizes the teaching of practical skills through “hands-on” experience with follow-up to ensure the sustainability of the new businesses created as a result of the workshop.\r\n\r\nBusiness Labs emphasizes personal development, business and technical skills training, access to financing, technology as essential elements of training programs for young people outside and inside the educational system. Reinforcing existing initiatives and helping communities and schools upgrade programs of demonstrative effectiveness instead of duplicating efforts efficiently utilize limited resources. \r\n\r\nLinking these components with a strategic framework maximizes the benefits that can be derived from complementary programs. Business Labs ensures that training programs provide the academic and practical skills necessary to bridge the gap between education and job markets. \r\n\r\nIn 2009, the program reached more than 30 countries across the Americas region and beyond, and trained several thousands (17,000 in the year 2006) young people and teachers in more than 75 regional and national workshops.
Background:
Poverty remains the central challenge facing the Haitian nation for several years, and its debilitating conditions – hopelessness, drug abuse, crime, and lack of skills - most severely affect young people. Because young people under thirty comprise such a large percentage of the population; up to 60% in Haiti, their future holds the prospects for social and economic development of the country. In response, the Young Americas Business Trust proposes to conduct a program of business-startup skills training and follow-up activities for young Haitian people under 35. Thus, the importance of promoting small local businesses is an additional answer to the increasing problems of unemployment and poverty in Haiti.
Objectives:
Main Objective\r\nTrain Thirty-five (35) Haitians in the “Business Labs Methodology” so that they can replicate it throughout the country to create more sustainable businesses and viable employment opportunities.
