Title: Sustainable Youth Development; Skills Forums
Location:
Categories: Human Rights
Environment

Status:
Timeline: February 15 08 to April 14 08

Description:
Using the experienced facilitators in youth and development, the project will undertake a one day forum on SUSTAINABLE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT. The forum will be conducted in each of 5 schools, bringing together 50 participants from each school who are members of youth clubs. The primary goal of formation of these clubs was to provide learning to young people in respective secondary schools. However, since their formation, no any stakeholder has ever supported any learning to these young people.

The forums will be carried out on weekends (Saturdays) and hence will take 5 weeks to go through all 5 schools.

The forums will help 50 young people in each school learn techniques of living sustainably and challenges towards youth development, and the various ways to overcome them.

The challenges expected to be addressed include;
- HIV/AIDS, Sexual and Reproductive Health
- Unemployment
- Use of Drugs
- Access to essential services (Education)

Background:
I live in Dar es Salaam City in Tanzania. Tanzania is a country with a population of 34.6 million people. Most of the Tanzanians are peasants and live in the rural areas. Tanzania is having 7% of all its population living with HIV/AIDS, and more than 50% live under absolute poverty.

Young people in Dar es Salaam are subjected to many social-political and economic difficulties, including unemployment, poor access to education, drug use and vulnerability to HIV/AIDS.

Objectives:
Direct beneficiaries are Secondary school students in 5 schools in Tanzania, hence 250 students. The age is between 15 and 25 years, both male and female, and the project will try as much as possible to put in line gender equity in participation.

Expecting that every participant will have impact at least on other 4 students, then the total number of direct/indirect beneficiaries will be 1000 secondary school students.

The participants participated in the formation of learning clubs and in my meeting with club leaders in May 2007, they all suggested learning on sustainable youth development.

Milestones:
1)250 students will understand the concept of sustainable youth development
2)The project will encourage the increase of number of learning clubs members
3)Attract more projects on skills forums
4)Build a interlearning network among students

Budget:
Total: 1000
I am Action Partner for Oxfam International Youth Action Partnerships for 2007-10. I am expecting to fundrise more from Oxfam especially in August 2008 when they will launch a grant program for action partners. I will include the sustainability of this project in my work plan for 2008-10.

Through this project, I am also expecting to train the young club members on different techniques of sourcing out resources to continue sharing skills.

Needs:
The project is based on skills forums to secondary school students in 5 schools in Dar es Salaam. The basic aim being to enable young people to learn more on SUSTAINABLE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT and challenges towards its achievement. The learning will be through the youth clubs which were formed by AIESEC international of University of Dar es Salaam. I am a member of AIESEC and I was an organizing committee member for the formation of these clubs in the 5 Secondary schools, as I was coordinating the external relations.
