Travel bursaries available for Commonwealth journalists

Journalists who work for members of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA) can apply for funds to travel to other Commonwealth countries. Deadline: July 1.
The goal of the bursaries is to support projects that would benefit the journalist’s organization and society as a whole. Applicants must submit proposals that explain why the travel is necessary. Proposed trips should last from one to two weeks, to be completed by the end of November.
The CBA is offering 12 bursaries worth up to UK£2000 (about US$3,985) each. Six are for journalists from developed countries and, in cooperation with the Commonwealth Foundation and the Elizabeth R Fund, six are for those from developing ones.

Essay contest focuses on media’s role in building peace

Students and other young writers can submit essays to an international contest on the media’s role in fostering peace. Deadline: June 30.
The contest theme: “The Role of Media and Information and Communication Technologies in Building a Peaceful World.” The Goi Peace Foundation and UNESCO are jointly organizing the contest, which has two age categories: up to 14 years, and 15 to 25 years old.
Essays should focus on how TV, radio, the Internet and other media can help create a better world.

Asian journalists can take crash course in media laws

Asian and Pacific journalists interested in enhancing their knowledge of media laws can apply for an upcoming course, scheduled for July 23 to July 25 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) is organizing the course, which will cover legal issues such as defamation, hate speech and government secrecy.

Essay competition seeks solutions from young people

Young journalists and students are among those who can enter an international essay contest that offers US$1,000 for each winning text. Application deadline: May 31.
The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) is organizing the competition. Writers should offer their own ideas for how to address the various problems—be they social, political or economic—that face their countries. Any students or professional age 18 to 30 are welcome to enter, but the center is especially encouraging entries from developing countries.
There are three categories, organized by theme: Citizenship in a Democratic Society, Educational Reform and Employment Opportunities, and Entrepreneurship and Leadership. There will first, second and third prizes for each category, and each of those nine prizes is worth an honorarium of US$1,000.
Essays must be in English, unpublished, between 2,000 and 4,000 words, and written by a single person (no joint entries). The cover page should include the category entered as well as full contact information, including citizenship.

Conference to discuss power in the Pacific

Journalists from both sides of the Pacific are invited to attend a networking conference to discuss media, economics, and power in the region. The conference, titled “Changing Dynamics in the Asia Pacific,” will be held from January 20 to 23, 2008, in Bangkok, Thailand. Early registration deadline: October 1.
Attending journalists will have opportunities to establish contacts, participate in panels and discussions, and exchange ideas with regional experts and colleagues.
The role of professional and citizen journalists, bloggers, and media conglomerates will be examined in light of current issues such as environmental and health threats; the rise of China and India as economic superpowers; U.S. presidential politics; changing demographics; and the development of peace and stability in the region.
The conference is also seeking individual and collaborative panel presentations; journalists wishing to present should submit a short proposal before the early registration deadline.
The conference fee for early registration is US$75; after October 1, fees rise to US$100. Registration includes all conference activities and materials, two dinners, and a half-day field trip around Bangkok.
The conference is being organized by the East-West Center.
