CCR Fall Consultation “Taking the Lead: Refugee and Immigrant Youth”

Working groups – how to get involved?

Brainstorming (possible activities for the CCR Youth Network)
- teacher training (critical)
- advocating for individual assessment of needs for newcomer youth in schools
o course placement
o educational assemblies for teachers and students, including personal stories
- resources and information on resources for issues affecting people without status
o links to organizations that assist youth with information services to eliminate fear
o collaborate with the Edmonton ‘environmental scan’ (borrow method?)
- include youth issues in every CCR consultation
- include greater attention to issues using a gender perspective, HIV/AIDS, sexual orientation issues
- refugee scholarship

- better organizing of social events for youth and other networking events
- evaluate status of youth network in decision-making process of the CCR relating to youth issues
- expand the CCR Youth Network ‘beyond the choir’ (to attract people who might not otherwise become involved in refugee and immigrant rights advocacy?)
- establish specialized groups – proceed with practical mechanisms
- 2-3 ‘official’ youth representations in every CCR consultation for liaison

CCR Youth Network Steering Meeting Notes
October 28th, 2006

Summary of tasks and decisions
- (TASK) Nico will do the translation to French of the Objectives, especially 3rd point.
- (TASK) Daniel will design a postcard in English, with our objectives, how we meet, and how to get in contact.
- (TASK) Everyone needs to send their brainstorms to the discussion thread in regards to the plenary session should be.
- (DECISION) Don’t send to just the Yahoo Group because some people are just using the TIG Group.
- (Task) Colleen will check in with Sara in Toronto to confirm her presence as a speaker at the Workshop.
- (DECISION) Nico will moderate the workshop on refugee youth
- (DECISION) Maggie will contact Mirlande about moderating the workshop on sexual health.
- (TASK) - Colleen will get name, last name, organization, contact information together for program
- (Task) Start a discussion thread. Who will start the thread (Madeline)
- (Task) A homework task. Suggest an ideal time, structure, and composition for the youth caucus session.

- Nico provided an overview of CCR Youth Network history for Asha and JagJeet.
- Colleen has been busy lately, bother her if she doesn’t reply to e-mails in a timely fashion.
- Try to keep it to one hour.

Agenda Items
- 1) Reminder to sign up for a TakingItGlobal

- 2) Welcome to Asha and JagJeet

- 3) Are there further changes required to the objectives.
- Nobody had comments.
- Colleen talked with Janet who suggested changing wording of the third point to.
- ALTERNATIVE WORDING WAS APPROVED.
- (TASK) Nico will do the translation to frech.

- 4) What should the opening plenary look like?
- We have about five minutes.

- Brainstorming:
- We can maybe give a brief history of what we are all about.
- Declaration seemed like a good idea, how to do it to make people enthusiastic?
- Nico said maybe a little history would be nice.
- Maybe also some more concrete objectives
- Maybe some background on who's one the steering committee
- Rather than just who the active members.
- Which groups are represented.
- Regions which are represented
- URL to the Project page?
- Give out the URL to the Project page.
- Could we have a link on the CCR homepage.
- Maybe little pamphlets or information we could hand out with history and objectives?
- Maybe a post card sized advertisement, to put at the CCR registration table. Please help your self so that those coming with organization can take some back to their youth!!!

- Re getting there: JagJeet will try to get in touch with CCR members coming from Halifax.

- Re Plenary session.
- Can it be more creative?
- We don't need to read them out.
- Maybe summarize the objectives?
- Talk about the direction that we are heading.

- 5) Taking it global
- Twenty members on TIG site.
- (DECISION) Don’t send to just the Yahoo Page because some people are just using the TIG page.

- 6) Workshop
- Colleen Summary
- Sounds like there will be an organization from Quebec City. Presenting on social barriers to ableism, and the affects of that particular social barrier on refugee and immigrant youth.
- We have someone coming from Toronto who is from The Eritrean community and they have recently written a report on the barriers to youth.
- We haven’t heard back from Sara.
- (Task) Colleen will check in with Sara to confirm her presence.

- Brainstorming:
- Maybe we can give each speaker 10 minutes.

- (DECISION) Nico will moderate the workshop on refugee youth
- (DECISION) Maggie will contact Mirlande about moderating the workshop on sexual health.

- (TASK) - Colleen will get name, last name, organization, contact information together for program

- 7) Foundation
- Revised proposal for March. We need to get it in for January.
- Foundation had a phone conversation with Colleen. They want to make sure that what we are doing is very innovative.
- Love that we are working with other organizations. But they really want us to be innovative. Their focus is getting youth engaged internationally.
- So they want to make sure that we get international?
- Maybe trying to coordinate efforts.
- Is this to far in the future?

- (TASK) Colleen will start a discussion thread, and Steering Collective members will comment on the thread.

- 8) Planning for a Youth Caucus at the CCR Conference.
- It would be helpful to have suggestions to present for an in person discussion at the CCR Conference so that we can use face to face time effectively.
- Plan for the youth caucus session.
- What do we want to be doing in general. What activates in general we want to promote.
- Announce that we will be having a caucus in the declaration.
- Announce that we will be having a youth caucus, to extend the invitation for participation.
- We need to say this is what we are planning on doing, in order to continue these efforts

- (Task) Start a discussion thread. Who will start the thread (Madeline)
- (Task) A homework task. Suggest an ideal time, structure, and composition for the youth caucus session.
9) Youth orientation Wednesday evening. Fill scheduled at nine PM in the Hotel. We can have youth orientation from 7:30 to 9:00 in one of the meeting rooms at the hotel.

- 10) Next call. Saturday, November 11th, same time.
