TITLE: Case Study: Arctic Sovereignty
TIME: Full Day
ROOM: 2945
SUMMARY: Join Daniel Savas, Peter Wheatley and a distinguished list of expert participants in our dialogue-based session. The Arctic is one of the last global frontiers. Until recently, governments and other non-state actors have not actively sought to establish firm policy frameworks that govern relationships and development in the North region. Recent events, brought on largely by changes in the earth’s climate, global demand for energy, and security/defense issues, have pushed the Arctic further up the policy priority ladder. For countries, like Canada, whose territorial integrity includes the Arctic, the need for policy clarity has never been more urgent. Canada’s position and role in the Arctic, however, is a veritable Rubik’s cube of cross-cutting issues, actors, and claims. The need for Canada to unravel the complex twists and turns of the cube, and to assert its interests in the Arctic is an important foreign policy priority. The key question guiding this Arctic case study is: How can Canada show leadership in the Arctic? For more info, go to http://antarcticacasestudy.tumblr.com
