Description:
The HAPPY (HRUDAY ASSOCIATION FOR POSITIVE PEOPLE AND YOUNG) is a non profit, non govenmental organisation born out of felt need of the people who have marginalized sections. It started in Andhra Pradesh, INDIA. It started with an inspirational thought/feeling/idea by Mr. Laxmaih, a young Graduate.
Background:
India is one of the largest and most populated countries in the world, with over one billion inhabitants. Of this number, at least five million are currently living with HIV. According to some estimates, India has a greater number of people living with HIV than any other nation in the world. 1
HIV emerged later in India than it did in many other countries, but this has not limited its impact. Infection rates soared throughout the 1990s, and have increased further in recent years. The crisis continues to deepen, as it becomes clearer that the epidemic is affecting all sectors of Indian society, not just the groups – such as sex workers and truck drivers – that it was originally associated with.
Objectives:
Project Inform has been at the frontlines in the fight against HIV/AIDS since 1985—when reliable information about the disease and its treatment was nearly impossible to obtain. Project HAPPY started in 2005 is a national, nonprofit, community-based organization working to end the AIDS.
Milestones:
Inform people living with HIV, their caregivers, and their healthcare and service providers about the treatment and monitoring of HIV disease.
Advocate to facilitate research towards a cure and appropriate policies, legislation and funding for HIV research, treatment and care; and
Inspire people to make informed choices, take effective action in the fight against HIV and choose hope over despair.
