Description:
Many boys fall victim to commercial sexual exploitation and finally decides to make a living from it due to their economic situation. Many of them are at first disturbed of the experience but as it becomes a daily living, they see exploitation as an economic opportunity rather than an abusive experience. Almost all are left underserved and their abuse left untreated due to double standards that only considers girls as victims while boys are most often blamed of their own behavior, compelled to feel that society will not understand their victimization but instead accept exploitation as a rite of passage to manhood. They are therefore denied access to sexual and reproductive health as well as psychosocial, legal and economic interventions. These lead boys to suppress their anger, become violent at a later part of their lives and manipulative toward their exploiters that are extend to other people leading them to engage in risky behavior, delinquency and a distorted view of sexuality and relationships.
Background:
The innovation is youth-led. Most interventions for children are dictated by adults that most-often time punitive, moralistic, and subjective in nature where adults impose their own understanding of the situation of the child and decide on what is best for them. This innovation embraces the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child “the right to participate article 12”, to “freedom of expression” article 13, “freedom of association” article 15 that facilitates children to self-determination.
The innovation is a youth-adult partnership. Guidance from adults is essential for the success of the implementation with the role as facilitators and protectors for the best interest of the child. While the innovation is being managed by the youth for the youth, adult’s presence gives more meaning as they put into practice their eligibilities, skills, knowledge, and experience in contributing to the goals of the programme.
The innovation Is simple but addresses multiple issues. The innovation addresses five issues that accelerate holistic response for children, families and society. The (1) art intervention addresses inner healing and coping of past and present exploitation experience and future consequences. (2) Utilisation of time to productive and positive means. The masterpieces when published into calendars, postcards and public showcases addresses (3) social awareness on prostitution to the communities, society and legislators the real-life experiences of children and when (4) marketed also addresses economic self-reliance that facilitates transitioning from exploitative sources of income to self-generated income-first step to become entrepreneurs. (5) peer mentoring as a final path for peer educators to become role models to their peers. All in one cost-effective and time efficient behaviour change package
The innovation is a creative alterative learning system that delivers messages to those children who are denied access to information and services for their survival, protection, development and participation through youth-to-youth strategies.
Lastly, the innovation facilitates in a “self sustaining behavior change” starting from peers, families and communities. Change should start somewhere and we believe that its starts from dreaming. However, to vision one's future starts from somewhere again, and we believe it starts from arts expressions. From there, change takes place.
The innovation is a venue where peer-to-peer learning and community knowledge generation and exchange happens, the innovation facilitates in discovering and harnessing knowledge and resources among those greatly affected allowing them to utilize own resources and strengths to address their own risks and vulnerabilities. We are just facilitators in revealing capacities that is already there-the human capacity for response.
