Title: Project Joy - Chinese New Years Location: Categories: Culture
Status:
Completed
Timeline:
February 7 05 to February 7 05
Description:
The scope of the project will include people like the student volunteers who will learn from this experience, the elderly who will be brought joy as well as “by-standers” who will learn about these elderly and then start to do something for them as well when they see how inadequate the living conditions of the elderly are.
Student volunteers will be preparing a steamboat feast for 105 Elderly Poor to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year. The dinner will consist of ingredients that the volunteers will buy themselves at a wet market afterwhich it will be cooked and prepared by the students personally. They will also distribute 8-dollar ‘angbaos’ and pairs of mandarin oranges to herald the start of a good year for the elderly. Performances which include singing and the playing of Chinese instruments will also be put up.
Objectives:
-To hopefully bring some light and warmth into the lives of the lonely elderly during the Chinese New Year festivities, as many of them have been neglected and abandoned by society, having done so much for the society previously.
-To enable student volunteers involved to enrich themselves spiritually and mentally from this experience so that they may pay it forward in future.
-To teach student volunteers the value of learning beyond the classroom walls as well as learning from the heart.
-To inculcate organisation, leadership, rational and critical thinking coupled with compassion in the carrying out of and planning of the event.
-To bridge the stark generation gap by promoting interaction between the young of today and our elders.
