Description:
On 1 January 2005, the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY mobilisation was formally launched. This broad coalition of NGOs, trade unions, faith groups, campaigning organisations, student groups and celebrities have come together to demand that rich countries increase aid and make it work better for poor people, cancel unpayable poor country debts, and change the rules of world trade so that they favour the interests of the poor.
MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY is undertaking joint actions and mobilisation at key times during the year, urging the government and international decision makers to rise to the challenge of 2005 and calling for urgent and meaningful policy change on the the three critical and inextricably linked areas of trade, debt and aid. The coalition is part of a worldwide movement, the Global Call to Action Against Poverty.
Although this campaign is based in the UK, it's important everyone all over the world gets involved. There will be plenty of things to get involved in and we can help to lobby governments to make key policy changes. So what are you waiting for? Join!!!

Objectives:
Governments should:
1) Fight for rules that ensure governments can choose the best solution to end poverty and protect the environment. This will not always be a free trade one.
2) End export subsidies that damage the livelihoods of poor rural communities around the world.
3) Make laws that stop big business profiting at the expense of people and the environment.
The unpayable debts of the world's poorest countries should be cancelled in full, by fair and transparent means.
If the international community is serious about eradicating poverty all donors must meet the international aid target of 0.7% of national income as a matter of urgency.
Needs:
People, in the UK and all over the world, to lobby their governments and the UK government to accept that these goals are possible and should be put into policy by the G8 and EU. There will be plenty of events to also get involved in, including the 2 July 2005 G8 demonstration
