April 25, 2005 Followup Email after Strategic Planning

In the last week many of you have surely reflected on your experiences at the April 16th planning event at the Oxygen Studios in NYC. Any personal written reflections may be submitted to me to be added to the final report that I am compiling. I hope all of you have traveled safely since then and everyone is well. I can speak for the event organizers and say that the basic goal of convening a diverse group of young leaders and youth allies from around the US was accomplished, Spontaneous collaborations have already begun to flow from this day of interactions. Based on registration forms we have completed a rooster of participants and list of favorite websites. See attached.
Clearly the follow through of this group will be as important as the actual events of the 16th. There were commitments from most participants to stay involved at some level and at the least all agreed to attend a follow up conference call in two weeks. The Youth Sector Team organizers of the event would propose that this body of participants that chooses to stay involved be considered the “Youth Council Planning Team”. This team is distinct from the Youth Sector Team although there are many overlapping members.
As requested in the closing of the April 16th meeting Rob Schwartz and I, have convened a ‘disappearing task group’ to support the agenda setting and planning for the follow up conference call. The next conference call will be held
Saturday April 30th at 2pm Eastern Time.
The call in number is 1-866-918-5492 and the Access Code is 479945
Please inform us asap if you cannot make this call and we will make the appropriate arrangements.

In preparation for the conference call there will be another planning call on Thursday at 8:30 pm ET. Anyone is welcome who would like to help plan for Saturday’s conference call.

Brainstorm on Purpose and Impacts of a National Youth Council
Evon
ÿ builds networking base and info sharing btw youth org that act nationally,
building relationships, capacity for collective action when appropriate.
ÿ Gap in youth voice on sustainable btw regional and national
ÿ Speak to US Govt government – and UN
ÿ Sustainability is a word and an issue that incorporates multiple issues
(Climate, basic needs, pollution,etc)
ÿ Connect to global networks that focus on sustainability

Nishit
Supports Evon’s foci points and highlights
ÿ Bldg capacity of youth organizations and to work together
ÿ Communicator with governments

Doug- request for us to tease out what is within and implied in Evon’s statement

Dan
ÿ Need for a body focused on decreasing fragmentation among groups
ÿ A meta-organization to steward the integration of more focused organizations (not simply a network though)
ÿ move forward in more holistic way, recognize, multiplicity, see all aspects as priorities, reflecting our mutual inter-dependence, can’t afford to prioritize in way that social regional groups have done before,
ÿ Create an ongoing learning process among groups of how to acknowledge and integrate diverse regions, concerns, and populations
ÿ Acknowledge, recognize, and support ability to act on collective and interdependent issues

Lillian- agrees and explains that this helps clarify the first point recommended by the break out group from the 16th on Purpose.

Reflections on the 6 final points in April 16th Notes on “Purpose”
Evon
ÿ Points out distinction btw SD and Sustainability. Sustainability may be more relevant to the communities he works with.
ÿ Increase resources? For who and how?
Should be for local groups
Funding from governments or philanthropy?
ÿ Overall supports first five (#6 regarding $ gets complicated)

Nishit
Everything we brought up is already in the April 16th notes
Make Purpose more concrete and strengthen
Does not want to create financial bureaucracy
Catherine
Reach out to have regional representation

Next steps
ÿ Refine the Purpose statement- Daniel, Catherine, Nishit,
ÿ Lillian cannot continue actively and will find replacement
wants notes and to stay in touch
ÿ Barb Met with National 4H people working on ‘Youth Voice’
A project to develop youth leaders taking action locally for change
Will bring them into the conversation
ÿ Setting up online communication – Catherine
ÿ Doug – email cut and pasted contacts list

Ongoing Conference calls
Every other Sunday at 5pm
Next call - May 15th

Evaluation of Today’s Call
Nishit- Very good start. more clear, good next steps
With more purpose comes more ease in participation
Dan- Silence is awkward as the facilitator

Ideas for next agenda
Discuss the refined purpose document (Dan, Catherine, and Nishit)
What does this mean and how to move forward?
Brainstorm list of youth groups to outreach
Inviting potential planning team members to join
What type of outreach medias
Structuring, and governance, forming sub teams
Ongoing feedback mechanism (online)
What online tools are already available for us (SustainUS and TIG)
Big picture visioning
