Title: Jos Climate Rescue Project
Location:
, Plateau,
Categories: Peace & Conflict Environment
Status:
In Planning
Timeline:
Ongoing
Description:
Ours is a Project that seeks to mobilise members of the Jos City and surrounding Communities on the dangers of climate change on their community and what each and every one could do to help.
We hope to work with schools, community leaders, business organisations, the online community, local authorities, the media, civil society groups and donor organisations.
Background:
The idea for this project began to form in my mind after the last round of violent conflict rocked Jos in November 2008. I began to suspect that the continuous conflict over land ownership is influenced by the fact that the climate is changing; drought and desertification, irregular and insufficient rainfall, floods here and there and other environmental factors are mounting pressure on the livelihoods of the people. This pressure now leads to increased pressures and competition on the available land hence the conflicts.\r\nBut it does not always have to be so, we could sensitise members of the community (everybody; students, businesses, to care for the environment. Plant trees, take care of the existing vegetation, observe public sanitation, and reduce their share of carbon emission and pollution. If we get folks caring for the environment now, in a few years to come we will all be the happier for it.
Objectives:
Our objective includes to\r\n• Gather, package and widely disseminate information on climate change in Jos\r\n• Mobilise ‘ordinary citizens’ to care for the environment and encourage others to do so too\r\n• Encourage business organizations to invest in environmentally friendlier ways of doing their business\r\n• To assist in making Jos clean and safe to help restore the livelihood of the community (agriculture and the tourism and hospitality industries).
Milestones:
Within the first 6 months (January-June 2010), we hope to achieve the following\r\n• Ensure that the environment and how to care for it is placed in the centre of all discussion in and about Jos.\r\n• Ensure that a large number of the residents of Jos and environs are fully aware of what climate change entails, how it affects them and what they could do to help.\r\n• Facilitate dialogues about the community which involves all members of the community, not just government officials.\r\n• Promote the culture of using environmentally friendly ways of doing business in Jos.
Budget:
Our budget for the first 6 months is broken down below (all figures are presented in US$, which exchanges for about 150 Naira in Nigeria):\r\nINCOME \r\n• Grants from donors (in Cash donations) 1000:00\r\n• Sponsorship (in Kind contributions) 500:00\r\n• Volunteers’ Contribution (including free services) 500:00\r\nEXPENSES\r\n• Production of T-shirts and caps 533:00\r\n• Printing of advocacy leaflets 333:00\r\n• Transportation 133:00\r\n• Renting Hall for seminars 333:00\r\n• Placing Adverts in Radio 333:00\r\n• Communications (phone calls, internet\r\n services and distribution of materials) 333:00.
Needs:
1. Human resource: intelligent and enthusiastic individuals to serve in various capacities in the Team.\r\n2. Advocacy materials such as flyers, leaflets pictures, articles as well as other forms of information on climate change. Such information received from other parts of the world, may be adapted it to our local setting, or disseminate them as received.\r\n3. Support and cooperation of stakeholders: our stakeholders include the media and schools, no matter the amount of money we may raise; we are unlikely to succeed without the goodwill and support of our stakeholders.\r\n4. Financial assistance and sponsorship: our modest budget currently stands at $2000:00 (that is, including free/volunteered services to be rendered). The project certainly will not be successful until the funds are raised.
