How Has Climate change Affected your Community?

Have you noticed any changes in your community that are happening due to climate change? Any droughts, floods, irregullar rainfall?
In Jos and environs, rainfall is no longer predictable, there is drought and desert encroachment in some parts while some areas experienced floodings.
How is your community adapting and coping?

Last week Nigerian’s especially from the north woke up to find a thick fog hanging over the horizon. This sort of ‘harmattan’ is coming just when Nigerians are beginning to expect the rains. Soon, the fog spread southward and by now, pretty all of Nigeria is enmeshed in it. It got so thick that visibility was so poor in some parts that cars have to drive all day with headlights on while many airlines have cancelled or suspended flights.
The explanation we are getting is that the winds moving southward have picked up this dust and lost moisture over the Sahara dessert which is North of Nigeria. The sad implication of this is that if we had vegetation over the Sahara, we won’t be seeing this fog. On the other hand; the Sahara is roaring southwards and eating into Northern Nigeria. If we allow it continue, the ever moving winds will have more space to pick up dust and be sucked dry of its moisture… see how interconnected we all are? You don’t have to be the one that damage the environment, but if you don’t care for it and encourage others to do same; we will all end up with environmental challenges just as this fog over Nigeria or worse.
I have heard talks of acid rain and more scary things… Go care for the environment, and do it NOW!
