THE SUMMARY REPORT OF OUR ONE-DAY WORKSHOP WITH THE HEARING-CHALLENGE YOUTHS OF CHRIST LIGHT SPECIAL SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF, LAGOS STATE ON THE 19TH OF JULY, 2008.
The workshop started at 12:20p.m with a short opening prayer by the Project Coordinator, Miss (Olowoyeye Oluwatosin) while the School Proprietress interpreted for the pupils. Subsequently, we had the Skill Acquisition session for the youths which was handled by one of the Team members (Miss. Lola A). Although, it was a Nursery and Primary School for the Deaf, but most of these pupils were real-grown up! Imagine a 23years Old lady in Primary 3!! Hence, for the training session, we had to separate the youths from the children. And we had a class of 15pupils!. The skill acquisition session was centered on the art of making greeting cards (e.g. Birthday card, Success Card etc.) and this lasted for more than 45minutes because of the Sign language interpretation.
The next item as we had it on our programme outline was a Career Talk titled: “IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU!” This was presented by Miss Olowoyeye Oluwatosin. Convincingly, she encouraged the youths never to give up on their education because of their disabilities, Education is vital and must be earned accordingly. Indeed, it was quite remarkably that some of the students were actually self-sponsoring themselves to school because they are from poor homes. An example was Joshua, who goes to work every day after school hour and he earns N5, 000 per month. The career talk lasted for 20minutes.
Other activities include: Question and Answer section, Donation of Gift item to the school and entire pupil, Cultural Dance Presentation by the pupil playing of football, (The S-A-S Team with the DEAF Pupils) etc. But I’m sorry to disappoint you that they won us graciously (LOL) in the football march, beating us with seven goals to one!!! Can you imagine? Lol.
Finally, we ate, we drank (Water /Coca-cola), took some pictures and said our prayers. The closing prayer was said by an active member of the team members and also a TIG member. (Olasoji Emmanuel). The event came to a close at some minutes to 4:30pm
Last but not least, I updated the S-A-S Project Pics of the Team members with the School Proprietress. (Inset Picture: shows the pupils with the school bags and other items that we donated to them).
In a nutshell, the workshop was FUN and Interesting!
