Title: The MotherShipProject
Location:
Categories: Environment Human Rights Technology
Status:
In Planning
Timeline:
Ongoing
Description:
The MotherShipProject is a personal initiative to help alleviate crime and poverty in South Africa while having a positive ecological impact on the environment. The mission is to train and equip members from underdeveloped communities to construct and manage their own self-sustainable communities. Using a combination of various sustainable, technological and creative elements combined as a whole to sustain and develop communities in rural and underdeveloped areas. The MotherShipProject will empower communities to realize their basic constitutional rights, as well as generate an income through various initiatives. Freeing all members to pursue self-development and self- creation, rather than self-survival.
The project has a 3 fold approach. The areas of focus being, Earthship Construction, Information & Communication Technology Development and Creative Entrepreneurship.
Earthship Construction:
Earthships are self sufficient homes made of natural and recycled materials. They are generally made of earth-filled tires. It uses energy from the sun and wind, grows its own food, rainwater is caught, stored, treated and used 4 times over. Sewerage is also treated on site in a septic tank and the resulting water is used again. One of these units could easily sustain 4 family members with food, water, electricity and shelter.
Information & Communication Technology Development:
To reduce the technology gap and act as a form of recycling. Computer refurbishment workshops will be held to train communities to build and manage their own community computer refurbshment centre. The centre will be responsible for providing training, repairation and servicing of computers as well as generating an income for the community. The benefits which could be acquired from the knowledge and use of ICT's are immense for a developing nation. Some of those benefits which will be researched and implemented in the future are: e-Government and e-Learning.
Creative Entrepreneurship:
Creative talent will be harnessed in and developed by working along side the Cape Craft Design Institute . The CCDI provides seven programmes to support crafters and network all players in the product-to-market chain. Some of the training programmes being offered are: Creativity, Design and innovation programme, the Enterprise Development & Training programme and the Market Access programme. About 40000 people work in the craft sector in South Africa and contribute R2 billion a year to the economy. This would a good way to tap into existing markets by making use of skills already available in the community.
There is a need for more than 120,000 houses, over 300,000 people are unemployed, and more than 1,000,000 people do not have access to basic municipal services.
The MotherShipProject would empower underdeveloped communities to build their own self-sustainable communities. The trained community will in turn train another underdeveloped community and so on and so forth. The MotherShipProject will provide the community with tools needed to take the power into their own hands and realize what has been stated in the South African Freedom Charter starting a Green and Practical Revolution!
The People Shall Govern!
There Shall be Work and Security!
There Shall be Houses, Security and Comfort!
The Doors of Learning and Culture Shall be Opened!
Background:
Hear our Cries!
Dear Thabo Mbeki,My name is Bongekile Shinga. I am twelve years old. I have lived in a shack for seven years. Our shacks are built with boards and plastics. We use candles for light. We’ve got no toilet. When we’re coming from school, we’ve got no food to eat or clothes to wear because of the fire. We don’t want new houses in far away places. We are in the shacks, and it’s dangerous and there are bushes. We’re near a dump, and the water is dirty. We don’t want to go to Veralum. The other houses are falling down because they are built with plastics. There is no development here. Kids are playing in dirty waters, and they get sick. Old men are raping small children here in the shacks. And the criminals are getting chances to get in because they are built with plastics. We are not going to vote without houses. How could we vote if there are no new houses here in Kennedy Road? We are sick and tired to live in the shacks. Letters from the Youth of Kennedy Road to Thabo Mbeki
Objectives:
We exist to alleviate crime and poverty in South Africa while having a positive ecological impact on the environment.
Our mission is to mobilize, train, empower and develop South African poor in the fields of sustainable housing and community management using modern technologies.
We envision all South Africans living in dignity. Empowered and equipped to realize their human rights sustainably and with a do-it-yourself mentality. Creating real development through full community participation with a triple bottom up approach. Yeah!
Milestones:
Marketing, research and building a strong presence in the community by attending local community meetings every second week. Advertising on local community websites and blogs, including creating the projects own blog or website and aiming for 100 hits a week. As well as actual face-to-face surveys in the community.
2.Create/organize a learnership in the field of Earthship construction. Selecting a maximum of 12 trainees who by the end of a 3 month period will have the necessary skills to build the first Earthship units.
Collaborate and liaise with the Cape Craft Design Institute who will aid in the training and mentoring of the selected trainees. The period of training will depend on the existing experience of the trainees but could last up to 12 months. After the learnership the trainees would have the necessary skills in craft production and small business management.
Create/organize workshops in computer refurbishment for the younger members of the family while collaborating with NEPAD e-schools Initiative. Refurbished computers will be denoted to schools to impart ICT skills to young South Africans in primary and secondary schools as well as harness ICT technology to improve, enrich and expand education in South African.
Budget:
Research is in progress for an accurate estimation for the entire project.
Needs:
Team Leaders for departments in IT, Earthship Constrution, Creative Entrepreneurship.
Team Members to carry out individual tasks.
ICT (Information and Communication Technologies)can increase efficiency and improve service delivery for social programs just like it does for business. Therefore The MotherShipProject Team will be supported using modern ICTs to enable recruitment from all over the wolrd.
A project platform will be developed (http://www.project.net/flash_tour) where individuals from any where in the world can register and join the MSP Team. Individuals who would like to join the team would need to create a profile where all skills, interests and previous experience etc.(ie. CV) will be logged.
A Skills and Experience Inventory with be produced from all team members and updated regularly on the project platform. Skills will then be matched to specific tasks and team members contacted and requested for assistance on the specific task. Tasks will be broken down into manageable easy to complete assignments with due dates, skills, experience and resources needed for completion of the required task.\\\\r\\\\n\\\\r\\\\nTeam Leaders will be responsible for assisting, guiding and mentoring members who checked out tasks in their department and ensuring that deadlines are met.
All project related information will be stored in the project database/platform and accessed by new MSP members to get up to date with the project status. This will decrease the dependance on a fixed project team.
