Status: In Progress
Timeline: November 22 07 to November 22 07

Description:
Launched in 2004, the We are the Future initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between the Glocal Forum and the Quincy Jones Listen Up Foundation with the support of a coalition
of stakeholders, including the World Bank and major private sector companies. We are the Future’s main goal is to mobilize global resources for the benefit of children in post-conflict cities through the creation of municipally-owned We are the Future Child Centres that focus on youth-led activities in the five areas of Nutrition, ICT, Health, Sports and Arts.
To further the spirit of collaboration while at the same time synergizing our efforts, the Glocal Forum and UN-HABITAT have merged UN-HABITAT's One Stop Resource Information Center model for urban youth development with the We are the Future programmes. Since 2005, UN-HABITAT has been providing technical advice and support to operationalize this new initiative, entitled We are the Future - One Stop Child and Youth Centres. This new programme aims at building on existing UN-HABITAT and Glocal Forum youth programmes and concepts towards replication We are the Future – One Stop knowledge and expertise in new cities. Habitat Programme Managers have been instrumental in supporting the programme in the respective cities.

Background:
In 2005, UN-HABITAT and the Glocal Forum signed an Agreement of Cooperation aimed at strengthening the role of youth in decision-making processes at the city level. Subsequently, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between UN-HABITAT, the Glocal Forum and Starbucks in the same year, towards the development and implementation of We Are the Future (WAF) Centres in six post conflict cities. These pilot cities include Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Asmara (Eritrea), Kigali (Rwanda), Kabul (Afghanistan), Freetown (Sierra Leone) and Nablus (Palestinian Authority).
To further the spirit of collaboration while at the same time synergizing our efforts, the Glocal Forum and UN-HABITAT have merged UN-HABITAT's One Stop Resource Information Center model for urban youth development with the We are the Future programmes.
This new programme aims at building on existing UN-HABITAT and Glocal Forum youth programmes and concepts towards replication We are the Future – One Stop knowledge and expertise in new cities.

Objectives:
The primary outcome of the joint programme is to develop and implement youth-led services for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and youth living in urban areas in order to promote a healthy start in life and improved living conditions. It is expected that youth benefiting from programmes at the Centres will become new community assets able to extend new services to peers, younger children and their community at large.

Milestones:
In order to build the capacity of young people and the municipalities running the Centres, UN-HABITAT has partnered with the World Bank Institute and the Glocal Forum to implement the We are Future – One Stop Capacity Building in Conflict Cities Programme in three focus cities. Support for this was obtained through the World Bank Netherlands Partnership Programme (BNPP).

Budget:
The programme is made possible through a donation from Starbucks, from sales of CDs that were sold thorough their outlets and were produced by the Listen Up Foundation. The Centres are based on building partnerships with municipalities, the private sector, civil society organizations and development agencies, universities, among others in order to ensure sustainability and scale.
