WSIS Youth Campaign in the Philippines
- a multi-stakeholder initiative of the Young Volunteers for Sustainable Development, in partnership with the Youth Creating Digital Opportunities Network
The Young Volunteers for Sustainable Development is aggressively gearing towards strengthening and broadening Philippine youth participation to the WSIS process and agenda. One significant component of the campaign is to nurture a community of young people engaged and/or interested in ICT4D and turning the digital divide
into digital opportunities beyond the WSIS timeline. From September to December 2003, YVSD, in partnership with university-based youth
organizations around Manila, will conduct a "Youth@WSIS" exhibition caravan showcasing WSIS Youth Caucus and YCDO projects, initiatives, and perspectives on the information society. Preceeding these events, a Philippine Youth Consultative Meeting on WSIS will be held at the ADB Headquarters on September 8, 2003 where around 100 youth involved in ICT policy-making, media and communications industry, software applications and ICT4D civil society advocacy and
action have been invited.
A Philippine Youth Declaration and Plan of Action will be drafted and adopted by the participants and presented to the Head of the Philippine Delegation to PrepCom 3 as an input to the national WSIS position and global meeting.
Objectives:
This youth initiative is a framework strategy to nurture, promote and organize young people nationwide on matters of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) and Knowledge Networking for Development. Secondly, the initiative, fully led by young people themselves, will facilitate youth-led advocacy and participation in policy processes around the information society. The project will mobilize Philippine youth around the WSIS, establish a national structure to facilitate their engagement and produce a platform on the Information Society reflecting their perspectives.
Campaign events aim to cultivate young people as active stakeholders of the information society and innovative leaders in ICT4D projects.
