Young Community Leaders in North Bay & Sudbury

About  About
Title: Young Community Leaders in North Bay & Sudbury
Location:
Categories: Culture
Education

Status: In Progress
Timeline: September 1 08 to September 1 12

Description:
In North Bay, Sudbury and surrounding communities, YFL, in partnership with the North Bay and Sudbury YMCAs, is embarking on an exciting three-year initiative to bring the enthusiasm, intelligence and perspectives of young people to the forefront of building healthy, sustainable communities.

Phase One
The project launched in early September of 2008 with its first training of young people from diverse backgrounds from North Bay and Sudbury taking place in October. Once trained in concrete leadership skills, these youth will conduct community consultations with their peers, community organizations, businesses, etc. to develop a complete picture of the current strengths and weaknesses each community has when it comes to engaging young people in community leadership roles.

Phase Two of the project involves developing comprehensive, community-specific youth leadership engagement plans informed by the findings from Phase One. Community Advisory Committees made up of community stakeholders will provide support for future initiatives of the project, including developing youth-driven projects in North Bay and Sudbury that directly address the identified needs of young people as well target community issues.

Background:
The YMCA is a charitable association dedicated to providing opportunities to individuals, families and communities for personal growth in spirit, mind and body and service to others. ICA Canada’s Youth as Facilitative Leaders (YFL) program is a youth-led leadership training and mentorship initiative that works with young people from diverse backgrounds to develop the confidence, values and skills necessary to take the lead in building vibrant, inclusive communities.

Needs:
Motivated and passionate volunteers ages 15 to 30 to be a part of Phase I and Phase II of this exciting project.

Experienced and enthusiastic community members to be a part of the regional Community Advisory Committees.

Donations of food, transportation, accommodation, etc. for training sessions would be greatly appreciated!
