YES GAMBIA MEETS THE MINISTER OF YOUTHS & SPORTS

YES Gambia on wednesday 15th July, 2009 called on the Minister of Youth & Sports.

The meeting was amied at briefing the Minister of the restructuring process and other developments registered by the network.

During the meeting the YES Gambia team brief the minister of the 6 month plan of action developed by the network. This plan of action has already been assured of funding by the Gambia YMCA. The minister was also informed of a planned national youth forum plan for 2nd August, 2009 which planned to bring about 100 partners to discuss about the current issues surrounding youth unemployment which is leading a lot of young people to illegal migration and dealing.

In respond the Minister assured YES Gambia of his ministry's support. in attendance was all the heads of the different department of his ministry.

YES Gambia Re-structuring process

The YES Gambia has been undergoing a major restructuring process for the past 6 months.

The restructuring process was in respond to the huge challanges that was confronting the network. The network was restructure so as to enable it to be more responsive to the dailing challanges of youth unemployment.

The restructuring process featured youth leaders from all sought of development a areas, government, NGOs and the media.

The YES Gambia restructuring process was supported by the Gambia YMCA.

YES GAMBIA DAY LONG YOUTH FORUM
REPORT

INTRODUCTION

YEN Gambia on Sunday 17th June, 2007 organises a day long forum at the Youth Monument Bar and Restaurant in Westfield.

The forum brought together 75 people from Government, Employment Agencies, Media and the Young people.

As the theme of the forum was Young People and Employment, discussions and presentation were centred on Available Employment opportunities and Entrepreneurship skills.

Presenters with verse experience in the above mention areas were invited to make presentations.

OPENNING CEREMONY
The opening ceremony of the monthly youth employment forum brought together personalities from different institutions of interest to youth employment.

In his welcoming remarks Mr. Abass Bah, Programme Manager of the National Youth Council welcomed everyone to the forum and challenges the young people to use the forum as a bridge to overcome the gap which exist between them and the employers.

Mrs. Abissatou Janneh, of the Youth Monument thanks YES Gambia for going in partnership with the Monument. She said the Monument’s management is very concern of young people’s need for employment and for that reason they have develop a policy of employing only Youth. “90 % of our staff are youth and Gambian for that matter” she said.

She finally said she hope the relationship will be a continues one.

The representative of the Chief Executive Officer of Kanifing Municipal Council Mr. Sutay Jawo said his council is very proud to be associated with the forum. He said though the youth comprises of 67% of the population they are still the most vulnerable group. So a forum like this would be able to bridge the gap between youth and partners particularly on employment issues.

During the opening statement, the representative of the Secretary of State for Youth Sports and Religious Affairs Mr. Pa Malick Ceesay said the Minister is personally very please with the forum but apologises for not been able to attend as he has other official engagements.

He said the Department of State has been following with satisfaction the developments of the YES Gambia since its launching in 2002. He said Government is very concern of the welfare of youth and it’s out of this background that they have established the National Youth Service Scheme, National Enterprise Development Initiative etc. He said government will continued to support youth led initiatives like the YES. He finally thanked YES Gambia for their contribution to youth employment. He then formally declared the forum open.

The ceremony was chaired by the Country Coordinator, YES Gambia. Mr. Alfusainey Gano


PRESENTATIONS

1. Manufacturing Companies and Youth Employment
The first presentation of the day was by Mr Muhammad Sillah, the CEO of Sankung Sillah & son’s Ltd; (the biggest manufacturing company of the Gambia); he also doubles as the chairperson of the Association of Manufacturing Companies. His paper was centred on Young people and the manufacturing companies. He said the manufacturing companies are one of the highest employing block. “As the Youth comprises of 67% of the country’s population, so there is no way a company can grow without there support” .He said the problems the companies are faced with are lack of engineering and technical skills as most Young people are not skilful in these areas, this makes it difficult for young people to be employed in the industrial area. He challenges the Government to include skill subjects in the school curriculum so as to enable Young people to have marketable skill before completing school.

He final thank the YES Gambia for organising the forum which have mange to bring together all partners to discuss on issues affecting us all. He promises to work with YES Gambia in future.

His presentation was followed by question and answer session.

2. National Employment Policy and Young People
Next present was Mr Sambou Barrow, the Human Resources Manager, and Senior Economist at the Department of State for Trade, Industry and Employment. He presented on Government policies on Employment how Youth friendly are they .He said Government have been working hard to create employment for all citizens, but this cannot be just possible as the government don’t have the resource to employ all.Goverment have put in placed policy that has created the enabled environment for private and public sector intervention in employment creation. Government do realised keeping older people above the retire age (65years) is not promoting Youth employment, we are working to address this problem, he said.

His presentation was followed by a question and Answer.

3. Plenary

After the break came a very interesting plenary. The plenary was on YES Gambia Experience the plenary covered different areas from experience gathered in the past and Global submits, Employment polices in the Gambian, Youth led initiations etc. Mr. Sam Obi, the editor in chief of Daily Express and country correspondence of Radio France International reported on some successful business ventures youth has been involve in. He said it has to take a lot of scarifies and challenge. He also took participants through his own ordeal and how he gets to be what he is today.

Mr. Lamin Camara, National Youth Council spoke on the challenges facing youth people in acquiring jobs in which he mention the number of years experience which the employers ask for. “A young person who have never been employed how can he have the job experience if he is not employed” he said.

Mr. Peacock, Programme Manager Gambia YMCA. Spoke on young people’s attitudes to certain types of jobs as inferior. He said if we are serious with the campaign we need to promote all types of jobs.

Mr. Gano Coordinator of YES Gambia spoken on the 6 E of the YES Campaign saying they are the solution to the unemployment problems

Participants have time to critically discussion about different issues surrounding Youth Employment and finally came up with recommendation.

RECOMMENDATION

1. Forum to be monthly so as to be able to look at different areas of youth Employment.
2. The forum to be also organise in the rural area so that the rural youth can benefit.

3. Private and manufacturing company to create training programs for youth so as to make them employable.
4. More support for youth led initiatives is needed from authorities.

5. Organises series of sensitisation programmes on employment.

6. Continuous lobbing for youth employment creation by Government.

7. Promote private sector support on youth employment.

8. Promote decent work within the work environment.

9. Encourage attitudinal change by the youths on the available employment opportunities in the market.

The forum was fully covered by the State TV station Gambia Radio and Television Service and all the print media (Daily Observer Newspaper, the Point Newspaper, Foroyaa Newspaper, Gambia News Report and Daily Express)

The forum was attended by the Representative of the CEO of Kanifing Municipal Council, Executive Secretary, National Youth Council, National Coordinator Child Protection Alliance, Youth leaders, and final year students of the Gambia Universities, Youth with Disability and members of YES Gambia.

The forum was funded by Youth Monument Bar and Restaurant, and Kanifing Municipal Council.

THE GAMBIA GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE 100,000 JOBS

The Gambia Government has promised to create 100,000 jobs in the Gambia during the year 2007 - 2008. The jobs program targets the youth who comprise of more than half of the 1.5 million Gambian population.

This declaration was made during the presidencial campaign in which the President said his priority for the next 5 years is Youth and Women whom he discribe as the most volunarable.

This 100,000 jobs creation news which was carried in all the media house both print and electronic has increased the Governmenys popularity with young people.

YES Gambia & YES BISSAU FORM PARTNERSHIP

YES Gambia & YES Bissau has agree to form partnership programme in a bit to boost the YES Campaign in their various countries.

This partnership agreement was discuss during the National Youth Conference & Festival (NAYCONF) held in the Gambia in December, 2006.

During the conference the visiting YES Bissau delegation headed by the Country Coordinator Algasimo Bah discuss of signing an Memorandum of Understanding between the two networks.

The MOU will address the follow areas:

1. Annual exchange visits

2. Exchange of resource & Share of experiance

3. Annual Joint activities.

4. And any other areas of interest.

Part of the discussion potenial funders where identified for possible funding.

The two networks will meet latter in the year for finalisation and the signing process
