Timeline:
January 1 00 to December 31 12
Description:
YES-Kenya is a national multi-stakeholder network involved in promoting youth employment in Kenya. The network was established in 2002 subsequent to the Alexandria summit, and is element upon a growing Global Alliance to counter the various forms of unemployment amongst the youth through concerted and sustained action.
YES-Kenya’s vision is to facilitate the full and relevant employment of youth so that they can realize their full potential as individuals and collectively as members of society through economic, political and social action. The network sees societies in which young people are key contributors to the well being and sustainable development of the societies and cultures in which they live and of the global community as a whole.
YES Kenya in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs, managed to successfully host the third global Youth Employment Summit 2006 in Nairobi dubbed Creating Markets…..Unleashing Entrepreneurship. The Summit brought together more than 2000 delegates from over 100 countries. This was a major milestone in the history of YES being the first summit in Sub Saharan Africa.
YES-Kenya has established credit from the government through the Ministry of Labour and Human Resource Development as a key player in the quest to reduce unemployment. Towards this end, YES-Kenya participates in a roundtable set up by the Ministry to encourage cross-sectoral collaborative development of unemployed youth. This caucus has already developed a roadmap aimed at engaging with the problem. YES Kenya Currently seats on the External remittance and Foreign employment and Labour Migration Policy Subcommittees.
YES-Kenya has also been a key partner in developing Kenya’s Youth Policy and is committed to playing a role in the implementation of the same. Consequent upon this measurable success, the network now seeks to institutionalize youth service, which has not been accorded the prominence it deserves at policy level. Participation in the budgetary process is thus, a strategy for the same.
Spearheading youth involvement in the budgetary process as an approach to youth service, YES-Kenya is involved in searching for ways to steward the same towards better equity models rooting on a voice with influence, personal development, lifelong skills, democracy, partnership, youth rights, consultation and representation. Being the foremost youth network the country over, YES-Kenya – having seen through the National Youth Policy process – is currently on the path to developing the capacities of its member organizations with a view to widening their scope on the need and dynamics of total youth participation in decision making at all levels.
Objectives:
YES Kenya has developed a strategic plan aimed at building the capacity of the YES Network to realise the local objectives related to the unemployment challenge in Kenya. These objectives include:
(a)To build the capacity of at least 20% of the young people (youth) in Kenya
(b)To influence all relevant legal and policy making processes in Kenya to ensure they are pro-youth employment
(c)To enhance networking and strategic partnerships at local, regional and global levels
(d)To mobilize resources to build the internal capacity of YES Kenya
The objectives are very closely linked with the YES Campaign Framework for Action. Three primary approaches have been used in the design of the YES Kenya Strategic Plan which reflects the broad strategies of the YES Campaign: Knowledge Building, Outreach and Engagement and Capacity building of YES Kenya.
