Deputy Agriculture Minister and Mmember of Parliament for Chiradzulu East Mr. hnery Mussa yesterday threw the wait on YES Malawi camapign. Speaking during a meeting with YES Malawi team, Mr. Mussa who has made open donations to the camapign says he will launch five cooperative clubs for rural youth in his area to develop skills in general welding, capentry and also initiate an environmentally sustainable brick making machine. The technology according to the Deputy Minister does not need trees as firewood to burn bricks as it only uses sand and cement. Bravo and join us in congratulating this entreprenuer turned politician ready to assist Malawi's goal of creating one million jobs. At least 60 young people in Chiradzulu district, Southern province of Malawi will have some jobs by the end of this year. YES- we can do it as we have started in Malawi.

H.E. Dr. Bakili Muluzi

BLANTYRE
Your Excellency Sir,
Official Launch of the Youth Employment Campaign in Malawi
I am pleased to inform you that the Youth Employment Campaign will be officially launched in Malawi from the 19th to 20th December 2003 in Lilongwe.
The Youth Employment Summit was held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (The Library of Alexandria) from the 7th to the 11th of September, 2002 launching a decade long of action to create at least 500 million jobs for the globe’s young people. Malawi, which is amongst the first nations to form a Youth Employment Summit Country Network, participated at the Summit.
As the decade long campaign has been launched, Malawi needs to charter its way forward in participating in this global campaign.
Multi-sectoral and dimensional participation is a key element in the campaign that will identify the key areas that Malawi can work out and reach an initial target of 200,000 direct employment being created and almost one million young people having guaranteed formal and informal employment at their end of basic education by the year 2012.
The present Governments key agenda of poverty reduction is entirely dependent on how many young people; beneficiaries of various empowerment strategies are able to gain sustainable and productive livelihoods within this decade. To quote John F Kennedy a former President of the United States: “The Future promise of any nation can be directly measured by the present prospects of its youth”
YES-Malawi therefore writes to you as part of building partnerships towards empowerment of the young people-who make up the majority of our human capital for the next decade.
The programme, includes a day long YES-National conference where the national strategy will be officially launched and a Youth exposition to display various initiatives and programmes people are undertaking in areas of employment creation, credit access and provision, empowerment, skills training and transfer of technologies and general services provision to rural communities, young women and youth.
The Youth Employment Network Malawi, has a patron, Advisory team and Steering team currently being a supported by the existence of a Core Team of Government Agencies and selected Youth NGO’s directly involved in Youth employment and empowerment initiatives.
Our strategy available on-line on www.yesweb.org/YES-Malawi focuses on six areas of:
1. Entrepreneurship and business capital/management support
2. Agro-processing
3. Rural and young women special investments programme
4. Tourism
5. Information, Communication Technology
6. Youth Employment Policy enactment
The main four working areas to implement the programmes for Malawi includes: Policy, Capacity Building, Research and Advocacy to ensure their implementation
YES-Campaign does not seek to set up a new organization but enhance coordination between various stakeholders mainly Government and public sector services providers, the private sector, Civil Society and individuals willing to support development at grassroots level.
We therefore write to request for partnership statues including provision of documentation on any initiatives that you have undertaken to empower communities, programmes and future plans and support available that young people can tap from.
YES Malawi network also seeks for your financial, material and human resource support towards the national launch of the campaign and the initial YES-Campaign fund to empower various sectors of youth development.
YES does not advocate for financial capital, though it might be required as contingency funds to support required capital equipment provided under the programme.
This also serves as an official invitation for you sir to inaugurate the campaign in Malawi. Find the attached documents of the programme and our needs.
We are looking forward to your support in creating a sustainable livelihood for a young Malawian.
Yours in youth services:
Kondwani Bell Munthali
