Retirement Age

The Cabinet yesterday threw out proposals to have the retirement age for civil servants extended from the present 55 years to 60.
The proposal was drafted by the Public Service Commission and the Directorate of Personnel Management.
Should the age be reduced to 50 to cater for the younger generation.
It is reported that the older members of the Cabinet were in support while young members opposed the issue. Some, in fact, wanted the (retirement) age reduced to 50 years, to give chance to young people.
The proposal for the extension of the service term followed an announcement by Treasury PS Joseph Kinyua that the Government had frozen recruitment for an unspecified period.
The proposal from DPM was that the retirement age would oscillate between 55 and 60 years and would be determined by a performance-based appraisal.
The Government is also in the process of retrenching 21,000 civil servants in its effort to arrive at a lean but efficient civil service.
Early this month, Government spokesman Alfred Mutua announced that all civil servants would sign performance-based contracts beginning this year.
All those who failed to meet set deadlines would be sacked, Dr Mutua added.
