Title: Youth Contest for Critical Thinking, Research and Writing
Objectives:
• To encourage Sudanese youths to develop critical thinking, research and writing skills
• To enhance the responsibility of youths in thinking, researching and writing about issues of importance to them and their own lives and situation within Sudanese societies
• To promote the knowledge of youths about issues of importance to the political, social and cultural life in Sudan
• To create an outlet for youths to express their thoughts, concerns and aspirations
• To help reveal the talent of youths
Competition Themes:
• The opportunities and challenges of ‘Diversity’ in its different levels in Sudanese society (ethnic, cultural, linguistic etc.) and how to best engage with, promote and celebrate this diversity;
• Youths and peacebuilding, social justice and conflict resolution;
• Sudanese Youth and Violence (in its different types and levels)
• Gender differences in Sudanese society and ways forward for equity and equality.
• The role of social systems and socialization processes in shaping the identity of Sudanese Youths
• Youth inclusion and/or exclusion in public policy making, political participation, etc. and youth active participation in issues such as peacebuilding, conflict resolution, creating a democratic culture, etc.
• Engagement of Youths in Post-Referendum Sudan issues (e.g. social and cultural accommodation, political accommodation, etc.)
• Sudanese Youths and Leadership
• Sudanese Youths and Active Citizenship
• Youths and Education Issues in Sudan
• Sudanese Youths and engaging with the internet and social networking
• Dialogue and understanding between youth and other generations
• Youths and livelihood in Sudan
• Youths and stereotyping in Sudanese society
• Youths and the ‘Other(s)’
Note:
- All works have to be relevant to the Sudanese political, social and cultural context, and related to Post-Referendum issues.
- IDCS has the right to use the submitted entries after the announcement of the results in any publication using the name of it’s author.
- IDCS offers technical support to contenders; that can be reached via calling Contest Coordinators, or state coordinators in their respective states;
- IDCS offers support through its website,
- IDCS will conduct numerous sessions across the states, that will tackle and highlight the themes of the contest, available information on schedule of the sessions can be provided by the coordinators in all the states and IDCS office.
Types of Writing Formats Expected:
A. Conducted / Implemented Research Project: A research project pertaining to the above themes that has been successfully conducted / implemented with clear results
• First Prize: 10,000 SDG
• Second Prize: 8,000 SDG
• Third Prize: 6,000 SDG
B. Academic Article, Essay or Investigative Journalism work, or Research / Project Proposal:
• First Prize: 7,000 SDG
• Second Prize: 6,000 SDG
• Third Prize: 5,000 SDG
C. There may be other ‘in kind’ awards for winners and other worthy contenders.
Language:
Entries can be submitted in Arabic, English or any written national language
Criteria of Contenders:
• Individuals should be between the ages of 18 and 35
• Contenders can apply to the contest either as individuals, in pairs or as a group
• University students can use adaptations of their dissertations as entries to the contest
• Associations and organizations that work in youth-related issues can compete as an entity
Panel Composition:
The Youth Contest Panel will be composed of a number of expert judges as well as representatives from IDCS.
Selection Criteria (depending on the type of work presented) include:
• Innovative ideas
• Critical thinking
• Rigorous Research
• Excellent Writing skills
• Full project proposals with clear rationale and practical recommendations
• Commitment to the specified youth subjects and themes
• Works should be typed out clearly in A 4 documents
• Number of Words:
- Research (15000 – 20000) per work.
- Essay ( 3000 – 5000) per Work
Time Duration:
The deadline for the acceptance of applications will be 15.May. 2011
Number of Copies:
3 Copies of each work must be submitted

Announcement of Results:
• The names of the winners will be announced 2 weeks after the deadline of the acceptance of entries (30th, May, 2011)
• The prizes will be presented in a ceremony after the announcement of the results.
