Title: Extending Healthcare to 300 Vulnerable Children
Location:
Categories: Health
Status:
In Progress
Timeline:
April 1 09 to April 30 09
Description:
It is very common in rural as well as in urban areas to find vulnerable children (women or girls) who are abused or neglected in one way or the other presenting with reoccurring infections which (according to the Strategic Document for the Health Sector) is a major and principal cause of morbidity and mortality in Cameroon. At the national level it is responsible for: * 50 % of medical consultations; * 23 % of hospitalizations; * 40 % of annual household expenditure on health. Sometimes, these infections develop into more complicated diseases such as Sexually Transmitted Infections, Malaria, Sexual Dysfunction, Hypertension, Diabetes, tuberculosis, leprosy, or HIV and AIDS. The Strategic Document for the Health Sector indicates that the epidemiologic profile of Cameroon, like that of most Sub-Saharan African countries, is dominated by infections and parasitic diseases.
Background:
The project is being submitted in response to the call by GlobalGiving for members of the GlobalGiving project community to win a spot at the GlobalGiving Website that will be a big step towards connecting donors to worldwide network of legitimate and exciting grassroots development projects. The project is designed to initiate ‘national and global conversation’ on health and abused issues, reaching out to poor communities, families and households.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\nThe aim of the project is to improve the quality of health programs, practice and policies, while addressing abused issues in hard to reach communities in Mambanda and Bafut regions. Funds raised through GlobalGiving will go to support the cost of ordering medical care Kits from UNFPA, USA that will be used during the project implementation and to provide essential health care and reproductive health services and drugs to vulnerable children presenting with reoccurring diseases at the community, family and household levels or while traveling (mobile clinics). The project received some material support - 1.000 Tool Kits (The Global Hand Books for Providers) from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\nThe coordinator of the project Ms Gwewasang Ngum Afanwi received a scholarship from Oxfam Australia to attend the OIYP Kaleidoscope 2007 that held in Sydney from September 30th - 8th October 2007, where she gained the skills and tools needed to implement the project. Also, She received a learning support grant from OIYP-Australia and was trained for one month on effective diagnosis and treatment of reoccurring diseases at the Presbyterian Health Centre Bamenda from 1st November - 30th November 2008. The knowledge gained has helped to sharpen the skills of the coordinator to better safe the lives of underserved indigenous people in rural communities. The audience includes vulnerable children and orphans of HIV, especially young girls who are abused or neglected in one way or the other.
Objectives:
to ensure that broader issues of abused issues, poverty, culture and gender inequality that perpetuate the suffering of women are addressed;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\n● to develop and strengthen health information and surveillance systems relating to primary healthcare in order to facilitate evidence-based policies and programmes and their evaluation;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\n· to provide an opportunity for stakes to create a plate form to meet face-to-face with others from around the world to celebrate, create friendships, learn, strategize and network to foster deep discussions and sustained personal and professional growth;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\n· to improve the quality of life of deprived children thereby alleviating poverty and reducing the rate of mortality and morbidity at the community, family and household levels.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\n● to improve access to appropriate medicines, health products and technologies, all of which are required to support primary health care;
Milestones:
The project will work to accelerate reoccurring disease prevention efforts amongst vulnerable children and orphans of HIV (especially girls) and accomplishments domestically, focusing on three domains: (1) identifying vulnerable children and improving the reach of effective healthcare and prevention services; (2) improving research to develop and disseminate new and effective prevention tools; (3) providing specialized training and organizing seminars and conferences, educative talks and improving the tracking, monitoring and evaluation of common diseases and prevention efforts.
Budget:
$ 36.500.87
Needs:
1. $10.00 will provide a pregnancy prevention method (Depo provera) to one woman for 12 months.$50.00 will diagnose and treat at least three vulnerable children presenting with reoccurring diseases (for example fever, malaria, syphilis).\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\n3. $80.00 will train and build the capacity of five community healthcare providers in one week to understand circumstances affecting culturally appropriate care for vulnerable and orphan of HIV.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\n4. $3.750 will provide a comprehensive reproductive health and family planning training to 50 community workers for 21 days.
