Project:
Airborne to Volunteer

About  About
Title: Airborne to Volunteer
Location: Global
Categories: Education
Health
Human Rights

Status: In Planning
Timeline: January 1 00 to January 1 00

Description:
This project intends to achieve agreement from major Airlines to fund the airfare for volunteers travelling to developing areas of the world.

This is a potentially win-win project: volunteers are able to achieve their dreams and goals, airlines benefit from charitable donation and a humanitarian reputation, and (most importantly) impoverished global areas in need of big-hearted volunteers will reap the great benefits of their contributions!

Background:
This project was "borne" of the hope of volunteering in Africa in the near future. While the approximate $4500 cost of a three week placement in an African country seemed steep but - with a bit of hard work and fund-raising - possibly attainable for myself and my like-minded friend. The words following, however, divided our dreams: "Airfare not included".

What is important to note is that this is not of concern to myself but to my friend. I have never known the great obstacle of airfare between myself and a foreign country, as my mother recently retired from a long 38 years as a flight attendant for Air Canada. It seems extremely absurd to me, then, that airfare alone adds another $2800 to the cost of volunteering in such a deserving location as Africa for nearly anyone determined enough to persevere through the process.

Therefore, the concept evolved, and our hope is to petition major airlines to provide donations of air fare (whether whole or in part) to young people attempting to put heart-felt volunteer time in impoverished areas of the world. Without that extra few thousand dollars for basic airfare to far corners of the world, participating in such a journey would be much more accessible to the greater public - rather than just the lucky few such as myself.

We hope that doing so will help to increase the number of hands, smiles, and hearts that reach these communities, and allow a greater number of people to realize the rewards in contributing to the global community.

Objectives:
Achieve the commitment of several airlines to (full or partially) provide airfare grants to at least 10 young global volunteers each, yearly.

Ensure this provision reaches the appropriate deserving volunteers, starting within the next two years.

Milestones:
First goal: Create information packages for airlines regarding the project.

Second Goal: Make contact with several major airlines within Canada. (**If you would like to join this project from another country, it could definitely be broadened! Let me know)

Third Goal: Professionally pitch the project to airlines via online technology with a hope of further discussion.
