Background:
A workshop organized by the Commonwealth Youth Program in 2003 in Ahmedabad, India on environmental sustainability consisted of participants from Bangladesh, Brunei, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Singapore and Sri Lanka. During the workshop, the participants came to conclusion that there was a need for a network to be formed so that countries can come together into this network to share their resources and help facilitate more bilateral events. Hence, the participants agreed to form a network to establish a model of sustainable development by young Asians who are committed to conservation of the environment to promote development that protects natural resources and enhances them for the future generations.
Since there are many networks existing around only a handful of which are responsive and reputable, the participants wanted the network to be recognized as stakeholders in sustainable development in Asia. Hence, the name for the network was called Asia Youth Environment Network or AYEN for short.
Objectives:
1. To be recognised as stakeholders in sustainable development in Asia.
2. To be a hub for youth and sustainable development.
3. To mobilize resources for a common cause.
4. To empower youth for personal and social development.
Needs:
Upon forming of this new network, Environmental Challenge Organization or ECO for short was appointed as the Secretariat of the network.
We need a country representative NGO to coordinate the work in their country.
Each country representatives has the responsibility to promote AYEN to other organizations that share the same vision and mission to join us. Hence, it’d be their responsibility to update the secretariat every quarter yearly on the membership in their country so that the network will have the database of everyone on the main web where members can access to retrieve the information or resources needed. It is also the country representative’s responsibility to carry out the action plans they have proposed.
