Title: BIG Game Design Contest
Location:
Categories: Technology Culture Media Green Spaces
Status:
In Progress
Timeline:
July 15 07 to October 5 07
Description:
The Belonging Initiative, in collaboration with Aitken Leadership Group, is supporting the development of games that are fun and accessible for everyone, games that take play beyond computers and into the spaces around us, games that require people working together. BIG stands for Belonging In Games. We are hosting a competition to see who can invent the best BIG game.
We are inviting everybody we know. The kids rolling down the sidewalks, moms and daughters, directors of non-profits, disaffected Emily Carr grads, and you. This is grass-roots game design, a competition for non-gaming-professionals, whose game
experience may be limited to bouts of Tag or Snakes-and-Ladders.
We want you to enter this competition. You can win a little money and considerable acclaim, and help us fight isolation at the same time.
BIG games are fun, accessible games that include play in the ‘real world’ and interaction with other people. BIG games are definitely not solo, computer-only adventures. They are playable across urban landscapes, in real time, with real people, who may or may not have super-abilities.
Your challenge is to design such a game and pitch it to our panel of judges in October, 2007. You will win or lose on the strength of your pitch. The game need not be playtested to win — though a playtest might make your pitch meatier — it just needs to win over the panel.
The competition starts now. You need to submit your team’s name and the names of its members ASAP. The competition will be restricted to 20 teams. The competition will end on Saturday October 5th, when your team must pitch its game to a panel of expert judges. The judges will judge and there will be one winner. They will leave with a $5000.00, an honorarium for their genius, and a truly enviable notoriety.
The judges will judge your game on the following BIG games criteria:
1) the game must be fun
2) the game must be playable by pretty much anyone: young, old, straight, gay, transgendered, street-engaged, married, people living with disabilities, people living in yaletown, people who play World of Warcraft, etc.
3) the gameplay requires real-world interaction between people (such as online interaction, personal ads, phone-tag, postcards, flashmobs, etc.)
4) Players’ social networks are expanded to include people who are “different” from themselves
How to enter the competition:
Email Brian Smith [ bsmith@plan.ca ] with your intention to play. He will forward you some fine print.

Background:
Here is some really important stuff you need to keep in mind to play and win (seriously, really important) this info is also known as The Fine Print:
1) the game must be fun.
2) the game must be playable by pretty much anyone: young, old, straight, gay, transgendered, street-engaged, married, people with disabilities, people living in Yaletown, people who play World of Warcraft, etc.
3) the gameplay requires real-world interaction between people (such as online interaction, personal ads, phone-tag, postcards, flashmobs, talking, etc.)
4) Players' social networks are expanded to include people who are "different" from themselves. Your creative interpretation is necessary here. This is not meant to be cryptic, but rather flexible to ensure space is kept for people whom would normally not be included.
5) 1 or 2 representatives from your team should attend one of the two orientation sessions scheduled for 5pm, on either July 19th and August 23rd. Please RSVP with your preference and location details will be forwarded.
6) your team will need to submit a one-paragraph description and name of your game before September 28th at 5 pm PST to bsmith@plan.ca in order to qualify for the $5000 CDN cash prize.
7) Your team will need to present your game to a panel of judges and audience on October 5th, in Vancouver, Canada. This presentation can include video, audio, verbal, theatrical, power point or any other presentation media to exhibit your games ability to meet the aforementioned criteria. AV support for your presentation may be requested by October 5th. You are not expected to play your game on this day, although if you find a creative way to integrate play in the day, you will not be penalized. You will not be notified of whom comprises the judging panel before the 5th, but may include gaming industry representatives, women, boys, a juggler, a person with a disability, a former neighbour or even a member of the local constabulary.
8) You need to know how to spend $5000. Be sure you know how to do this.
9) Teams that include people from the gaming industry do not necessarily have an advantage. Why? Because our judges are looking for games that will work in the real world, with real people, the good, the bad and the ugly. So, teams that include the good, the bad and the ugly may have an advantage.
10) Problems may occur as the competition is conducted, especially since the BIG Games Competition is in its infancy. By participating in the competition, participants agree that the competition organizers will not be held liable should the competition fail to occur or should participants disagree with a game rule judgment.
* Participants acknowledge that results of all competition games may be publicly posted on the competition organizers' websites.
* Participants acknowledge that the competition organizers may write technical papers about the competition and results, including references to strategies employed by participating agents, with proper credit given.
* It is the best intention of the competition organizers to provide participants with future venues for dissemination of results, including publication, presentations, and discussion opportunities.
* THE PLAN INSTITUTE, BELONGING INITIATIVE AND AITKEN LEADERSHIP GROUP, AND ITS DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, SHAREHOLDERS, EMPLOYEES, ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION AGENCIES INVOLVED IN THIS CONTEST SHALL HAVE NO LIABILITY AND SHALL BE HELD HARMLESS BY ENTRANT, AND ANY TEAM MEMBERS OF ENTRANT, FOR ANY DAMAGE, LOSS OR LIABILITY TO PERSON OR PROPERTY, DUE IN WHOLE OR IN PART, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, BY REASON OF ENTERING THE CONTEST, THE ACCEPTANCE, POSSESSION, USE OR MISUSE OF ANY PRIZE, OR WHILE PREPARING FOR, PARTICIPATING IN, AND/OR TRAVELING TO AND FROM ANY CONTEST-RELATED ACTIVITY.
If you have any questions please send them by email or call 604-928-8931.
ps. Hint: BIG stands for Belonging In Games. Keep that in mind as you form your team, develop your game idea and present to the judges.
