On November 27th, 2004, it took place in the city of Daegu an event called Bring Smile to Kids.
Through this event, we wanted to show to the kids that there are many people who care about their future. Also, it was a great opportunity to get all the volunteers together to show ourselves that we can make difference in those children's life. Even though it is too early to judge our impact in the kids, our interaction with the kids has had emotional effects on the kids as well as on the volunteers.
According to Brian Phelan, an American volunteer who works as engineer, "This simple show that allowed our children to be recognized for their individual talent was a great way to share some love and individual attention these kids don't get enough of", he says.
Since November 27th, the number of active volunteers has increased from 5 to 11 who attend to orphanages regularly every week, which has helped to have a more organized English program for the kids. According to Phelan,"We can make a difference, no matter how small, it matters to the children. You can see it on their faces when you keep coming back every weekend for a class or just to visit and play. They are paying attention and they know you care", he says.
With the increase of volunteers,we look forward to providing help to other local and international orphanages. So far, there are about 19 orphanages in the city of Daegu, South Korea. At the same time, Oxford University Press has provided us with a second wave of books valued in U$700 dollars.
In conclusion, Bring Smile to Kids has had a good influence in raising social awareness to bring changes that would lead to a future with more equality for those children who live under the shadow of the forgotten. This project of improving the chances of getting a better education to Korean orphans is not a simple task. Even though it is too early to notice a major change in the orphan's education, this event has been a huge step to achieve our goal of inspiration and education to the kids.
