Illiteracy is a common and pressing issue among urban slum dwellers all across the world. Children living in these areas are removed from mainstream society and do not enjoy the education that their urban city counterparts do due to poverty. Through Project Children Behind Us, we seek to bring education to these children between 9-12 years of age at no cost at all. The pilot project will be implemented over a course of 6 months in Bintaro, Jakarta in Indonesia.We have a team of qualified volunteers who will set out to educate the children by going to the urban slum areas. Our goal is to provide them with basic literacy and numeracy skills such as reading, writing and counting which will enable them to find a place in society and lift themselves out of poverty. We believe that education is the key to ending poverty. We go by the motto Initiate, Inspire, Involve. We initiate change in society by inspiring others to get involved in uplifting the life of urban slum dwellers. We lead by example. Who is involved so far? Background:
Currently in South-East Asia, a good percentage of children-specifically urban slum dwellers have little or no access to education at all. Accessibility to education depends heavily on how much a family makes due to the rising cost of education, thus disabling those in the urban slums from a formal education. For the same reason, their health is also affected, causing them to have a short life expectancy rate. Through Project Children Behind Us, we seek to provide children between the ages of 9-12 in Bintaro, Jakarta with the necessary skills they will need to improve the living conditions of their community and alleviate themselves from the clutches of poverty. We envision a world where children in urban slum areas are able to read, write and count and subsequently lift themselves out of poverty. Through this project, it is our hope that at least 50% of the 25-30 children are able to write and read short sentences and perform simple calculations within 6 months of implementation. We also seek to implement the project in Malaysia and Thailand after the successful evaluation of the pilot project and finally, to begin a global movement to educate urban slum dwellers across the globe.
Objectives:
Main objective: 50% of the children can read, write and count by our method of evaluation within 6 months of implementation. rnrnSecondary objective: Supply sanitary aid to the children within the first 2 months to help lower risk of infections and diseases.rnrn- Implement project in Malaysia and Thailand after 6 months from pilot project implementation.
