Description:
We are a coalition of Canadian youth-led organizations who first assembled at the February 2007 Canadian Council for International Cooperation (CCIC) retreat.

During the retreat, we came to the collective realization that youth organizations need to A) communicate to other youth organizations more effectively and B) need to be better connected to more ‘established’ organizations. We concluded that the CCIC could prove to be an excellent forum for both these purposes.

Therefore, we are dedicated to enhancing meaningful youth engagement within the CCIC, by creating distinct mechanisms designed to respect, foster and strengthen the participation of youth organizations, and to prepare the new generation within existing member organizations.

Background:
The following Youth Recommendations were presented to CCIC members in February 2007:

• Create a Youth Reference/Working Committee within the CCIC to focus on policy relevant to Canada’s youth.
• Review the structure of CCIC working committees and the Board, to ensure that they promote meaningful and mutually beneficial participation by youth.
• Adopt and promote a Youth Engagement Policy for CCIC members and the broader international cooperation sector. This policy would encourage formal mechanisms for all organizations to respect and engage youth more effectively (i.e. including voting youth Board of Director seats, mentorship, etc).
• Hire a permanent bilingual Youth Coordinator within the CCIC to manage CCIC’s new commitment to youth.
• Discount CCIC membership for youth organizations’ participation.
• Assist youth organizations in building their capacities to access funding/resources (i.e. in working with CIDA).
• Engage, involve and invite southern youth organizations in general and to events.
• Acknowledge, promote and involve diversity (Aboriginal/Indigenous, LGBTQ, women etc) amongst youth groups within the CCIC.

These measures would do a great deal to enhance the contributions made by youth organizations, and would make CCIC an important facilitator for youth involvement within Canadian CSOs. This will strengthen the sector as a whole and will contribute to CCIC’s leadership role among current and future members.
