War, inequality, environmental degradation - they’re all just symptoms of a set of more deeply engrained problems related to how we interact with our neighbors, as well as the planet as a whole. Although the situations themselves are complex, many of the solutions are simple: all that’s required is for a few people to nurture them at a grassroots level, and wait patiently as they grow in prominence and begin to inspire others. Renowned social anthropologist Margaret Mead once reminded us to “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.” This is the attitude that inspires Why Everything Must Change (WEMC), an annual fall conference intended as a forum where participants learn about pressing social justice issues, discuss them with others, and are ultimately driven to be the change that they know the world needs. If apathy and self-centredness are the parasites that cause a young idea to wither, awareness and empathy are the nutrients that bolster it and make it fruitful. Come to WEMC 2009, and learn about the foundations of social justice and global transformation. In order for a movement to thrive, it’s protagonists must consider the threats posed against it, as well as refine the strategies that will strengthen it in the long run. This is a conference that promises to increase your understanding of the anatomy of change. Location: The Meeting House Time: 18:00 PM-1:00 AM ![]() User: susiemowers Description: What is Power Shift? On October 23-26, 2009, over 1000 young people from across the country will converge on Ottawa to take a message of bold, comprehensive and immediate federal climate action to Parliament Hill. Power Shift will be two days of training, strategy and action and one mass lobby day to hold our elected officials accountable to for their part to solve the climate crisis, and to build a cohesive and effective youth climate movement. This will be the largest-ever gathering of young people on the environment in the history of this country. At Power Shift Canada, we will deliver our message of change to our elected officials. Youth of all backgrounds will come together to create a fresh, positive, and inspiring vision of the future, one focused on our potential to overcome the challenges of the 21st century, build a clean energy economy, create millions of green jobs, increase global equity, and revitalize our economy. Now is the time for action. Now is the time for boldness. We will accept nothing less from the people with whom we have entrusted our future: our elected officials, and most importantly, ourselves. 2009 will be a year history will remember. Strategic timing There are two key events on the political and environmental horizon: the 15th annual Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP15) in Copenhagen, Denmark in December 2009, and the G8 Leaders’ Summit in Huntsville, ON in July 2010. The Canadian public values international leadership and expects to see Canada taking progressive, principled positions on the global stage. Unfortunately, at present there is a disconnect between belief and reality when it comes to perceptions of Canada’s negotiating position on climate change. While a majority of Canadians want the federal government to take bold actions, many are unaware that Canada is an international laggard in this regard. Power Shift will play a key role in directing the attention of media and Canadian society to our government’s role at both events, and in setting expectations for leadership that we can be proud of. Power Shift: A Global Phenomenon Power Shift Canada will join a formidable global movement of young people who are stepping up our leadership on climate. In 2007 the United States’ Energy Action Coalition held the first-ever national youth summit to solve the climate crisis Power Shift 2007 (http://powershift07.org/) which brought over 5,000 young Americans from all over the country together and created a shift in the national climate movement. Power Shift 2009 (www.powershift09.org) brought an unprecedented 12,000 to Capital Hill. In July of 2009, the Australian Youth Climate Coalition will bring 4,000 young Australians together at their country’s first Power Shift, and the United Kingdom will do the same in August of 2009. Location: Parliament Hill Time: | 24![]() User: susiemowers Description: First Steps Adrian Bradbury and Kieran Hayward first heard the stories of the night commuters of northern Uganda in the spring of 2005. They read unbelievable accounts of children — as many as 40,000 — walking from their rural villages into the town of Gulu and other urban centres to sleep in relative safety and avoid abduction by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) for use in the country’s 22-year war. The plight of these children sparked the idea for GuluWalk, a 31-day night commute to raise awareness about their harrowing reality. Every evening in July of 2005, Adrian and Kieran walked 12.5 kilometers into downtown Toronto to sleep in front of city hall. At sunrise, after about fours hours sleep, they made the trek home. Both men continued to work full-time and attempted to maintain their daily routine to mimic the lifestyle endured by the Acholi children of northern Uganda. Over the 31 days, they walked 775km in 154 hours 18 minutes and 872,739 steps. GuluWalk Keeps Growing Since the first walk in 2005, thousands around the world have walked to tell the story of northern Uganda and bring attention to the plight of its people. Since it’s inception, the event has raised over $1-million for the children of northern Uganda. GuluWalk continues to have a global reach and has been featured in media outlets all over the world, with GuluWalk co-founders Adrian Bradbury and Kieran Hayward being recognized in 2005 as Newsmakers of the Year by Maclean’s magazine, while Adrian’s writing on the conflict continues to appear the National Post, the Sudan Tribune and Uganda’s Daily Monitor. Just last year, on October 25, 2008, more than 30,000 people, in 75 cities in 16 different countries took to the streets to urge the world to support peace in northern Uganda. GuluWalk is clearly no longer an effort by just two people. Now, it is made possible by the support of so many volunteers worldwide and the experience and compassion of numerous partner organizations. This year, the GuluWalk takes place around the world on October 24, 2009. Get involved here. Northern Uganda Today While we are happy to say that the night commuting has currently stopped, the need for rebuilding in northern Uganda is ongoing. In the midst of the conflict, more than 1.7 million people have been displaced from their homes and forced to live in squalid camps. There, huts are packed tightly together, access to clean water is limited and violence and disease are rampant. While some camp residents are returning to their former homes, northern Uganda is in the midst of a transition: a tentative peace has come to the region, and rehabilitation, rebuilding and stability is greatly needed in order for the next generation to succeed, live in peace and indeed have the chance to lead the region to prosperity. For up-to-date information on the region, visit Resolve Uganda, and learn more about our partners and programs here. Location: Global Time: |

Location: Simcoe County District School Board - Facility Services Time: 9:30 AM-14:30 PM | 27 | 28![]() User: chiaramente Description: Why Are We Doing This? The new imperative to collaborate is rooted in the need to solve persistent multi-dimensional problems and a growing appreciation of how collaboration fuels innovation. It is blurring boundaries between audience and creator, inspiring us to build infrastructure differently, and forcing us to think about new ways of doing things. In businesses, governments and NGO’s, people are being called upon to break out of their silos, rise above self-interest for the common good, and get creative with their colleagues in other departments and sectors. What’s The Challenge? While collaboration for collective interest sounds good in principle, it is easier said than done. Conflicting interests, egos, cultural barriers, and exposure to liability are among the things that can make it hard to find common ground. Difficulties posed by collaboration tend to reinforce conventional approaches and as Jane Jacobs used to say, “squelch creativity”. What is needed is a new way of thinking: one that recognizes that successful collaboration may require different approaches to: leadership, design, facilitation, risk analysis, diversity, infrastructure and technology. While the imperative to collaborate may be stronger than ever, the thinking and practice about how to do this effectively is not as widespread. Who Is Producing Creative Places + Spaces? Creative Places + Spaces is presented by Artscape, in collaboration with MaRS, Martin Prosperity Institute, and the City of Toronto - Economic Development, Culture & Tourism. What themes will Creative Places + Spaces explore? The overarching idea behind this year’s forum is that collaboration fuels innovation by connecting people, places and ideas. Additional themes to be explored include how: - Team-based design thinking is leading to new approaches to problem solving and idea generation; - Collaborative leadership is creating a new frame of mind and new styles of leadership; - Education approaches are shifting to prepare people for 21st century economies; -Diversity is a major driver for innovation, producing major dividends for communities and organizations; -New technologies and physical infrastructure are fueling collaboration and innovation; - New relationships and partnerships between unusual groups and organizations are re-writing the rules of engagement and measures of success. What outcomes and legacies do conference organizers hope to achieve? Creative Places + Spaces: The Collaborative City will engage global perspectives on collaboration and connect them with local change-makers. It will encompass in-person and virtual exchange of ideas culminating in a 3-day conference in Toronto that provides delegates with new insight and approaches on how to effectively collaborate. One of the major outcomes of the forum will be the collective creation of the ‘The Keys to Collaborative Cities”: guiding principles on what cities and communities need to do to foster creativity through collaboration. Creative Places + Spaces aims to: - Inspire a sense of what is possible through creative collaboration; -Create a multi-dimensional learning experience that advances thinking and practice; - Break down barriers to collaboration; - Be the catalyst for the development of new platforms for dialogue about cities, creativity, and collaboration.
