dear fellow clc-ers!

so october has been hectic and very exciting. on this post, i shall let you know how TIG is doing in st. john's! i am organising a training session / climate change workshop in the first week of dec. for this purpose, i met the one and only David Suzuki (thats right Kerry!) and representatives of Memorial's environmental group "project green", oxfam and engineers without borders (ewb). the david suzuki foundation, memorial university student union, and project green has agreed to help us out. i also contacted the Community Enviromental Coordinator for CPAWS. this type of outreach, coordination and planning will, i hope, lead to informed and committed young leaders.

after so many meetings and project planning, i am in the process of selecting the highschool and middle school students who will be a part of this workshop / training session. i have seven TIG presentations next week, and a TIG party! the challenge here is making sure i make this very informative and very interesting. so i will be contacting all of you for fun and attractive ideas (i'm looking at you jess!).

there is so much to do, and i must get to it! wish me luck...

cheers!

Hi guys!
October had been a really crazy month up here in Ottawa with meetings and events and live chats going like crazy. It's really been a blur, but it is great to feel all of the hard work from last year is starting to pay off this year. I find that increasingly organizations are coming to me and trying to find out how we can help them instead of me doing the approaching all the time (though I still do quite a lot of that). I'm not very sure where much of what I do fits into the CLC Wigs, I guess my two key achievements for this month were:
1)The Live Chat – Youth Speak Democracy (Engagement?)
- largest CLC live chat with 52 members
- 4 guest speakers
- participation from 10 countries
- held in conjunction with CBC Montreal Matters
- new TIG members involved
2)Workshop Planning (Engagement)
- submitted workshop proposal to Organizing for Justice conference (and was accepted)
- discussing workshops with Child and Youth Friendly Ottawa for their conference Dec. 8 – 2 CLC
workshops, one facilitated by Lynne, one by myself, one Social Networking and Filmmaking for
Social Change (me) and MDG Guide to Action (Lynne)

Two key objectives for next month:
1)Getting more organizations to claim their profiles. (Engagement)
2)Training youth (and community groups) on the project page. (Action)

Some of my challenges this month were:
- Keeping up with requests from orgs to post event this month – only 15 posted out of 100+ events. Solution: Organize meeting for Ottawa orgs to learn TIG tools, especially event posting, so they can post their own events and encourage them to be more active on the site.
- Lots of the meetings I was attending with local orgs were duds. Solution: Before I agree to a meeting, look at the website of an organization to make sure that their goals are similar to TIGs.
- Online engagement – I love posting on the discussion boards, but I found that a lot of them were a bit stale this month, not as active as they have been in past. I think it may just be a really busy month for everyone, as I already see discussion perking up in November.

It is great to see what a fantastic start everyone is off to. Keep up the great work and I think we are going to do some amazing things this year!

What and awesome month! I feel eons ahead of where I was last year at this time. I also feel much more tied and motivated in the projects we are working on. The last month flew by so fast but at the same time I think much was accomplished.

I began the development of CLC's first Webinar at the beginning of the month. I've been toying with how to relate things into one another for some time but it has come together fairly well. I just recently sent off the promo materials to Mai so I am patiently awaiting that so that promotions can start. I am working hard on finishing the PowerPoint for next week so that I can send it off to the team for their suggestions. It should be a very interesting project and really help to achieve several of our goals in all areas of action, engagement and reach.

I also had the great privilege of moderating our first live chat of the year! It was great....kudos to everyone involved in putting it on. Especially Nikki and everyone putting up with the logistics of syncing it with the Montreal Matters radio show - it was a blast! I cannot wait to do it again. It was a great achievement in meeting our objectives towards engagement!!

Coming up this month I'm hoping to meet with Nikki, our Ontario Engagement Coordinator to see where we can meet up and coordinate things here in Ottawa. I will be doing some online training with Julie very soon. An then, the big event - our November webinar!! It should be amazing. Keep an eye out for all the details. This will obviously play a key role in achieving our objectives in engagement and action as well as reach.

Finally, the challenges of the past month have really been minimal. Again, I still feel a bit disconnected but I think continuing to develop regualr meetings with our clc team here in Ottawa and always updating/checking the project page keeps me in the loop. I'm looking foward to continuing this. Also, the team meetings are playing a really key role in helping to mitigate the "loneliness."

It's been a great month and I look forward to more! :)

From me to you - peace!

Kyle

Well, it’s been an interesting month, to say the least. It flew by so fast that I’m worried that I am (gasp) getting old. Despite a few stumbling blocks, I feel really good about progress this past month. Firstly, I had a really productive meeting with the Halifax contact for YouthScape, and starting in January I am going to be helping out with the program as a mentor for their promotions team, in order to document all the great things that their youth are doing. I’m really excited about this, as I’m very interested in alternative media and presenting information in accessible and relateable way for youth across all education levels. This will also be a great opportunity to encourage youth to use the tools available on the TIG website.

We have also launched a climate change contest, another issue that is really important to me. Check it out in the global gallery! I’ve done quite a bit of public education for climate change stuff, and I think that oftentimes people perceive it to be too dry and sciencey. I think this contest is a great way for youth to learn about the issue, get creative, and use that creativity to make a difference.

Next month I’m going to be in Poland for the UN Climate Change contest, so I’m really hoping to engage Nova Scotian TIG members on the issues while away, and also provide support for the international day of action. I’m also hoping to get in touch with teachers to get workshops firmed up for the New Year.

I think a big challenge for me (which I’m sure is the same for a lot of you) is Halifax’s small population. I started this month really concerned about the limited number of organizations and resources to tap into here in Halifax. Boy was I wrong. The more I’ve networked, the more I’ve found out about really cool organizations doing really great things that I’d never heard of. It got me thinking: I’ve lived in Halifax all my life and I had no idea these resources existed. How many other people are there who could really benefit from these programs if they just knew they were out there? This has made me determined to connect with these organizations and spread the word about the opportunities that are available for Nova Scotian youth right here in the province,
 All the best from one coast to the other!
