Hi everyone! I know its very last minute, but here some of the issues we are asked to blog about as per our monthly report.

Achievement

1) Meeting with local youth and non profit organizations

I would say the majority of this month has been beginning getting the word out there with local organizations and meeting with them to not only explain what TIG is, but what areas of colloboration can potentially be. This last month I met with numerous organizations and let them know about TIG. I would say the majority of responses were positive and in some cases a more solid relationship has been created - which concurrently I want to continue. All this gh is very positive and I guess fits in to the third goal of CLC - connecting and encouragin colloboration between youth/youth initiatives. As well, I think it falls into goal 1 as well somewhat - that of raising awareness.

Objectives

1) Though in October, I did not run any workshops, November is looking much better for this. A little while ago, I created a flyer promoting our Web 2.0 workshop and emailed it to a group of people. The response has been fantastic! I already have 2 set workshop dates this month, one in December, and interest from another organization. So I hope that this month I can implement these workshops, learn from them and help improve for future initiatives. In this regard, I hope I can acheive CLC's goal #3 - connecting and encouraging colloborations between youth/youth initiatives.

2) Also this month, I hope to implement a live online discussion amoung youth on the ongoing genocide in Darfur. I hope to use the technology we have access to, to gather young people from various locales to come together and have an interactive discussion with not only each other, but our panel as well. I already have two panelists confirmed. Now I just need to choose a date and time, which technological platform to use and advertise! This objective would fall into goal 2 - increasing accessibility to youth opportunities and resources.

Challenges

Thus far, the challenges I have faced have been pretty minimal. If I had to pick one, it would be the initial unease I had when I left our training session back in Sept. I just don't think I was fully comfortable with the knowledge to represent TIG here in Vancouver. But I guess just with more meetings I had with people, it got easier and easier. As well, the constant contact with the people at the head office as well as my regional team made it much more easier.

One challenge I am having though (and this may be fixed soon with the website revamp) is the complexity and overwhelming nature of our site. Even though I know how to use our platform, it can definetly be overwhelming for a new user or someone is not that technological saavy. However, I hear that a revamp is in the works - hopefully this can deal with this issue.

Anyways that it for me.

Take care,
Tosh

Hello everyone!

How exciting was last night! If you haven't heard the news - Barack Obama is the new President elect! It was funny because I was on the computer on a number of different websites waiting to find out who would when.

So on TIG front, whats been happening. Well a little bit ago, I created this very basic flyer for the 'web 2.0 social networking for social change' workshop. I emailed it to some of my contacts and thankfully some people are interested. So thus far I am giving the workshop twice this month hopefully. Once for a local university club and the second at youth event - both of which I am happy with. Another organization wants it for a date in December. This workshop seems to have a lot of interest shown to it by other organizaitons. I would highly recommend that you get the word out to your communities about it. If you guys want to see a copy of the flyer, just email me and hopefully I can email it out to you.

Besides that, one of the organizations I originally met with and pitched the idea of TIG, is now very interested in the website and hopefully will use it for their work in the near future. It's a pretty cool organization. Its called Check Your Head. Its a small non profit here in Vancouver that works with young people. There are definetly some parrallels between our organizaiton and theirs. Check out there site - http://www.checkyourhead.org/

Anyways everyone, take care and hope to talk soon!

Hey guys. On Saturday I attended the One World Film Festival by World Inter-Action Mondiale. I had an interesting time. Unfortunately there were not any youth there so I couldn't really spread the word about TIG, but I had a strange experience. I guess the Finish Embassy sponsored one of the films and paid for the filmmaker to come to Canada from Finland and there was this reception thing afterwards for the ambassador. It was really strange. Not knowing that there was a reception involving ambassadors, I wasn't dressed for the occasion so I was trying to sneak out but got caught in his receiving line. Then I ended up meeting him and his wife, when along came someone I knew from my days with Amnesty Canada. So here I am having a conversation with the Ambassador from Finland and the former president of Amnesty International Canada and out of nowhere my english professor comes up. Not really thinking anything of it (its not like I haven't talked to ambassadors before through CLC, and I have known Nancy for many years) I introduced them, which freaked my English prof right out. Later when I was talking to my prof she said "I had no idea you were so big in Europe". Anyways, just an interesting story to share about some of the crazy situatinos you find yourself in working for CLC Canada.

Monthly highlight of mine :

This month I did four presentations in total at a local middle school ( 2 presentations of 2 presentations I had organized). After both presentations, I was e-mailed by students asking how to set up volunteer activities and how to personally get involved in their community, whether it is through TIG or just in social activism. It was amazing to see the kids inspired by another youth, and they seemed to have realized that each person can make a difference. It was an awesome experience.

Love always,

Meg :)
