hello everyone,
hope all is well.
hope exams/school/other work are going well for everyone.
so yesterday I did an interview with a girl who worked for a university newspaper/journal. The journalist was interested about writing an article on web 2.0 tools with a focus on how student clubs can use them for social change. so i whipped out the social networking for social change guide/workshop and talked about it. when the article comes out, hope to get you guys a copy.
besides that, i just have to finish some last minute internal things before the end of the week.
take care everyone,
tosh
Hello everyone!
I hope you're all doing well in this busy period of the year.
I just wanted to let you know about the upcoming activities the CLC Quebec team will organise/participate in. On Monday, we'll be participating in a regional youth event organized by the Forum jeunesse de l'Île de Montréal (http://events.tigweb.org/22763) where we'll have the chance to promote CLC and TIG. On Tuesday, I'll be moderating our last francophone live chat at 1pm, it will be a pleasure to discuss with you; http://events.tigweb.org/23373. On Tuesday afternoon, we'll take part in an open forum organized by INM and have the opportunity to network and listen to some famous Quebec guest speakers; http://events.tigweb.org/23901. On Wednesday, we'll organize our last open forum in partnership with CWY; http://events.tigweb.org/23903.
See you on Friday,

Hey CLC - I wanted to let you guys know about how the consultation with Equal Voice went yesterday and about the program they will be launching in the fall :)
Equal Voice will be launching a mentorship program in the fall called "Experiences". The program will allow girls and women interested in politics to meet with female politicians in a variety of capacities, such as informal meetings, luncheons, or meeting at constituency offices. In preparation for the program Equal Voice has been holding consultations with young women across the country, to learn how to best communicate with them, address their needs and concerns, and reach their goal of increasing female participation in politics.
I was asked to help facilitate a francophone consulation in Timmins yesterday morning at École secondaire catholique Thériault, with about 60 girls in 10th grade. They talked about the challenges they see in getting involved in politics, mainly lack of political education in school and intimidation when faced with such a male-dominated sphere.
I most certainly understand that lack of education is a main factor to the lack of women's participation in politics, because it is simply not often presented as a career option.
I think we can also overcome intimidation through education. Politics is seen by so many young women, and even men, as distant - something they can't really get involved in, can't really understand, and can't really affect. Programs, such as Experiences and the Forum for Young Canadians, and improved - mandatory - civics education in schools could help youth see that it is not so distant, and that they absolutely have the power to affect the decision making process.
The young women talked about how they want to see their particular values reflected in Canada's politics. To them, issues such as education, poverty and women's issues (ex. abortion, cotraception, health) would be addressed in a different way if more women were involved.
I was happy to hear one young lady say that "We can't complain if we do nothing about it." - which made me hope that a simple discussion about women and politics was enough to motivate some participants open their eyes to opportunities for them in politics.
It was a really great experience and I look forward to working with Equal Voice again. I encourage you guys to learn more about the Experiences program, and if you haven't heard of the Forum for Young Canadians, check that out too. These programs are really worth promoting!

Hi CLC team, Hope everyone is doing well and gearing down for the last week with CLC.
This month I helped out with a workshop for UNPAC. UNPAC is a great local organization made up of a group of women from Manitoba who is committed to the ideals of equality, development and peace as articulated in the Platform for Action of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. There work is centered on promoting women's economic equality through popular education and advocacy. My favorite part of the workshop was how we reached out to women from a variety of backgrounds, many whom were new to Canada. This organization and workshop really put into place a way to reach out to new immigrant women.
Also, I want to thank the whole TIG and CLC team for being some of the most organized, enthusiastic and action-seeking individuals I’ve worked with. You’re all great!
Hey! What a busy month (already) for me with CLC - and loving every minute of it! I am so thrilled with all of the opportunities I have gotten in Ottawa. I hope the students who attend the amazing conferences there are here realize how lucky they are to have access to such a great variety of events!
I helped Volunteer Ottawa at the media launch for the ChangeTheWorld Ontario Youth Challenge (National Volunteer Week), hence my absence at the team meeting. This was a great opportunity to network with Volunteer Ottawa, the staff were very interested to hear about the work TIG does.
Nikki and I got to do a Social Networking for Social Change workshop (and she also did an environment workshop while I was doing an exam) at an incredible conference called Roots & Shoots, a program of the Jane Goodall Institute. We also got to attend her lecture afterwards, which put an interesting perspective on the relationship between humans, animals and the environment (we can't help one without helping the other).
I added lotsss of organizations to the TIG database this month, and I really hope they will take advantage of all of the tools offered on TIG.
Just as I thought there would be no more workshops, I got a last minute call to facilitate a discussion group about women and politics for Equal Voice in Timmins, at my old high school. As I so happen to be in Timmins, I will be facilitating the discussion tomorrow and I am verrry excited about it! (My favourite topic!) I will update you on how it goes.
Now back to studying for exams.. good luck to everyone else in exams and with wrapping up CLC projects you are working on in your communities! :)
