Hey guys!
Last Friday night (a week ago) I attended a verissage for a local artist named Elizabeth Marshall. She is a young abstract artist who does a lot in the community in particular she is working on a project delivering workshops to children and youth in care. This event was held to mark the launch of her website and to garner interest in her work in the community. Though I admit, one of the reasons why I went was because I had a short film going up with her work,it was also a great opportunity to make connections with the local arts and non-profit community.
The event started a little slowly as there were some technical difficulties, but this was actually one of the best parts of the event - everyone in attendance came together to assist with setting up the event.People were helping to hand the paintings, set out the foot, distribute the flyers and setting up the tech equipment (which I stuck to). Because everyone helped to set it up, it gave the event a real feel of community. I think that when holding in person events this is a good attitude to adopt - its not a set back, its a community building opportunity!
The actual event was made up of a formal portion - remarks by the MC, the artist spoke about her vision and the project, the film, and short speeches by representatives of the Ottawa Children's Aid Society. After the formal portion there was a mix and mingle. I get to meet some staff from the International Development Research Council, a photographer trying to embark on a video project with the Ottawa Food Bank and the reps from the Ottawa Children's Aids society, including a young artist/advocate for youth in care who did a great speech. They both seem really interested in the workshops that we offer, in particular the Guide to Action workshops. We will be discussing the opportunities for us to work together, in particular regarding the days of action.
Aside from that, I have been working to rehash some relationships made from last year and I have been working on the Live Chat which is Monday from 12-2pm Eastern Standard Time on the Live Chat tool. I hope to see everyone and their friends out on Monday!
Ok, so I had an unfair advantage today. Mai was actually in town and we both went to this meeting that focused on I believe the educational aspect of the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver and was held by the Vancouver Olympic Committee and the BC Ministry of Education - or at least these two organizations were present. Anyways, in leading up to the games they are having a series of online chats and Taking IT Global is helping in the post-chat portion of these events through the use of a project page. The meeting was very interesting for better terms of the word. Very fascinating to see the beuracratic side of government and its workings.
We also had a meeting today with a local organization called Check Your Head. One of the areas it is focusing on is Sustainable Schools by discussing climate change issues at schools. Anyways we sat down and talked about how TIG and Check Your Head could work together and some really interesting ideas were discussed - this potential colloboration I am excited about.
Anyways, tommorow we have 3 more meetings to attend hopefully - so busy busy busy!
Take Care,
Tosh
hey guys!
just an update! I did two presentations today at a local middle school here in rothesay. They were my first two presentations ever, and they worked out perfectly! I'm so happy with how everything worked out, and everyone seemed so inspired. A lot of kids came up to me after wanting to start human rights clubs or get involved with TIG. It was personally inspiring, as well. I hope everything is well with you guys.
Love always,
Meg
It's done!
I finished it last Friday on my way to Washington for a class trip. What is "it" you say? The outline for the first Webinar. It's a new one, its a great one! Its going to be a cross between the Guide to Action, Social Networking for Social Change and Change that Clicks. It's all about technology, safety and how organizations can take action with it!
I'm excited to talk to Mai about it and move forward toward implementation. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts please let me know and your input would be great!
Also, Live Chat....next Monday! I am very excited to see you all there!
Kyle
