(http://www.takingitglobal.org/resources/events/)

Au plaisir,

Justine Castonguay-Payant

Hi everyone,

I hope all is well.

Well, after the weekend I am back at it today with the networking.

Its a little challenging at first. I don't know if anyone else shares in my feelings about this. But persevere right?

For my first event, I have an idea of doing an online debate. I actually got the idea from Yassir while we were in Toronto at the Police Station (when Saad went to report his wallet missing). Anyways Yassir was saying that during his time with TIG he put on an online debate using an online application. I thought this was a really interesting idea as it was free, convenient for all users and used technology to connect people.

Anyways I am thinking of doing an online discussion with young Darfur activists in Vancouver with young Darfur activists in Sudan - similar to what we did with the Palestinian youth during our training session. So still in the planning stages, but will hopefully let you know the progress on that.

Anyways, thats it from my end.

Hey!

After the national team meeting with the rest of the youth engagement coordinators yesterday, I felt a burst of inspiration.

Later that day, I had to attend a meeting for SCOPE, which is a grassroots-Toronto organization that aims to get more local youth thinking about post-secondary education. This year, I'm their VP of Operations, and we had our first executive meeting Friday night.

For some time now, SCOPE co-founders have been discussing the need for a "groupware" of some sort to a) upload documents, b) communicate with each other. They have their own IT department and the last I heard about a month ago, someone was working on getting this necessary groupware. It was before my participation with TIG, so I didn't say anything at the time.

However, at this current meeting- I decided to bring up the subject of groupware. I tried to pitch TakingITGlobal and it's project pages to the co-founders of SCOPE, highlighting all its features and benefits.

Unfortunately, the response I got from the was very negative. They said that any other groupware is able to do all the things that TIG does, and in addition to that, most other groupware can link directly from their website (http://www.yourscope.ca). This means that they are able to sign in to use the groupware directly from their own website, as opposed to through TIG.

At the time, I did not pursue the cause any further, and I was fairly disappointed.

Now though, I realize many things that I could have done to pitch TIG ProjectPages betters, and I'm just writing to give you guys some advice about them.

Always think about what sets TIG apart from other "groupware" options when you are trying to pitch. In TIG's case, it is the ability to be able to:
A) NETWORK WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS
B) RECRUIT INTERESTED YOUTH
C) PROMOTE EVENTS

SCOPE is looking towards creating non-profit partnerships, getting publicity and promoting two events that they are holding at the end of the year. If I had highlighted these features better, I am sure I would have gotten a much better response.

I'll definitely be better prepared next time, and I hope this helps the rest of you!

You certainly do live and learn.

Hey CLC friends and coordinators,

I am writing this blog while participating in the first CLC National Elluminate Meeting. Everyone is giving some update about what he has been doing in the last days after the CLC Orientation in Toronto.

Well, it is nice to see that everyone is active, motivated, focused and excited about his engagement as a CLC Coordinator or Regional Leader or Community Connector.

Last Wednesday (October 1st), I participated in an event organized by ApathyISBoring which covered 2 main topics: Youth and Democracy & Women and Politics. It was actually a great opportunity for me to promote CLC Canada and TakingITGlobal to many youth who were participating in the Montreal event.

Moreover, I met with some staff members from other youth and non-for-profit organizations such as ApathyISBoring, Katimavik and Elections Canada. I discussed with them about their work with youth in Montreal and I told them about my the CLC activities in Canada and in Montreal, Quebec.

I gave them the TIG annual reports and encouraged them to become TIG members !

Hey!

After about two weeks of training, it's officially the beginning of my time here, and I'm very, very excited!

I've worked out the website more or less, and started keeping personal blog on my profile; I think that's definitely my monthly accomplishment for September. Other than that, I'm attending an educator's conference (www.cace-acace.org/en/) with Mai on Monday to help present Web 2.0 tools for Social Change.

Hopefully, I'll have a lot more exciting things happening this month to share with you all!

Cheers!
