Hi CLC Team,
I am so happy I had the opportunity to connect face-to-face with the TIG staff and CLC staff in Toronto 2 weeks ago-It WAS AMAZING! I had such a great time in Toronto meeting new friends and learning about TIG. Everyday I was challenged and inspired by the way in which TIG has broken down physical and cyber barriers to connect youth to limitless possibilities. With that being said-I am excited not only to be apart of this social change initiative, but apart of TIG. Despite a case of food poisoning-that lasted a solid week. Everyone I have connected wwith are eager to see how TIg and using Technology will enpower.

Hello and Welcome to our 2008/09 CLC Coordinators! It was great to have you in Toronto as part of your orientation and training. I really enjoyed the scavenger hunt - and having you with us to celebrate our TIG Birthday Party (8 Years)!

IMG_1116Yesterday, we welcomed guests from the McConnell Foundation to our Toronto offices who were eager to learn more about CLC Canada. We were joined by Lyn Baptist and Graham Angus Trustees on the Board of the McConnell Foundation along with Stephen Huddart (Vice President) and Claude David (Director of Finance and treasurer).

(Photo to the right.)

We first gave a tour of the office and introduced them to members of our staff. They seemed really interested in our team - Lynn was especially curious about our work in creating educational resources and Graham asked about how we use sites like facebook (we talked about our Commit to a Better World facebook application). Stephen asked us to comment on our open office setting and the ground rules that we have related to our work environment.

Given the time of their arrival, rather than show the PowerPoint presentation, we jumped right into the online chat with some of our Canadian members. They were asked to share their comments on the dynamics of our online and offline work. A few comments from the CLC coordinators were shared:

We decided to keep a more informal conversation going for our remaining time - which was relaxed and enjoyable. We showed them our CLC Canada Project page (that has recently re-launched - http://projects.takingitglobal.org/clccanada/). They were very interested to see where our team members are located, we talked about our partnership model with host organizations. We showed them the blogs and they were curious about moderation of content. There was a comment about how well written the blogs and discussion on moderation of content. We were also asked about the privacy settings that we have for schools and talked about our TIGed virtual classrooms. We talked about the relevancy of our site and Lynn thought of her own daughters as potentially being able to benefit - she asked if we promoted volunteer opportunities and we showed her our resources section. Graham asked questions about how we carry out our work today compared to when we started the organization. We talked about how we focus a lot more on integrating web 2.0 tools such as the google maps and RSS for blogs as well as embedding youtube videos and flickr photos. We also talked about the web 2.0 for social change facilitators guide that we recently created and will be used by our CLC coordinators to deliver workshops across the country (especially for local organizations). We had some discussion about how non profits are typically not as tech savvy and also how there is still a digital divide - even here in Canada. Claude asked about our opinion on the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) initiative and I talked about my impressions and how it is doing well as it has influenced industry to reduce prices and innovate for the developing world, but that the OLPC has been able to have as many orders that they initially hoped for (there were government commitments in the media but not in writing). Relating to issues of accessibility, we talked about how we reach underserved youth through the Change that Clicks program with the Boys and Girls Club as well as our partnership with PLAN and the belonging initiative. As they left, we had available copies of our Annual Report & CLC Canada recent project report that they took with them. Final comments were shared about the relevancy of our work and Lynn asked if we could share our web 2.0 for social change guide with some other non profit groups that she works with. All in all, I think it was a great visit. I am really glad that I was in town (instead of China) and that I was joined by both Kimia and Mai - our National Program Coordinators.

Special thanks to our CLC Coordinators - Nikki, Kyle, Christine, Daniella and Justine - who joined the live chat!

Hi everyone !

Last week, the CLC Team, composed of dynamic youth who came from all over Canada (Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, BC, NL, ...), participated in an interesting CLC Orientation which took place from Thursday to Sunday.

In reality, the training was a great opportunity for the CLC Coordinators to meet each other, to exchange our ideas, strategies and best practices, to be trained on many topics (Workshops: Social Networking for Social Change, Climate Change, Train the Trainer - How to introduce TIG and CLC to different audiences ? - CLC Evaluation, events and online meetings ...) and to visit Toronto !

By the way, many thanks to Kimia, Mai, Jennifer, Mike, Incia, PJ, Muneeb, Chiara and all the CLC Coordinators who made this training an awesome one. I am sure that this experience will help us throughout the year since we had the opportunity to meet face-to-face and not just online with the TIG Staff as well as the rest of our team.

Have a nice day !

Hello everyone!

I hope all is well with you and your families.

It seems like yesterday that we were all at the TIG head office wrapping up our training session, but that was over a week ago! Time flies..

Anyways, since then I have found myself thinking about different things I can do on behalf of TIG in my community and I am quite excited at some of the possibilities.

Last thursday I got started on my networking when I sat down with the president of the UBC (University of British Columbia) chapter of STAND (the organization that works on the Darfur conflict). I brought out my laptop and showed him the TIG website and tried to encourage his organization to start a project page. I think the meeting went really well and he seemed very interested. It was my first TIG related networking session and I think it went pretty well. So to all of my fellow YEC, don't worry if you are a little nervous, just go out and be yourself!

Today I called the Boys and Girls club here in Vancouver to discuss the 'Change The Clicks' program and see if our two organizations could get that initiative going here. Our initial phone call went well and I am hoping to send them some more information via email soon.

I was just on my Gmail, trying to get my TIG account going and I am have some technical difficulties.. anybody else share this problem as well? I hope to contact Mai or Kimia to help me with this.

Anyways, thats it for now!

Take care,

Tosh
