Hi all,
I just attended the Vitalize conference on Friday which is held for the voluntary sector here in Alberta. There was a separate youth component organized by my host organization, Alberta's Youth VOLUNTEER! with a "Lights, Camera Action" theme. What a great day!! Almost 100 youth were there to start off the day by an inspiring talk by Severn Cullis-Suzuki (who mentioned TIG throughout her talk), then the youth formed groups to work with a local improv (Rapid Fire) group to create short mini films to convey a message about what inspires them to be involved. While the the 8 groups filmed their videos, we watch the hilarious improv group do their magic on stage. After lunch the Kindness Crew were there to provide even more inspiration (and hugs!) and then the Vitalize Youth Fest Film Fest showcases the films and awards were given out. Fantastic day with lots of energy and enthusiasm. The best part was that the entire day was planned by the AYV! youth board of directors. I was there as a supporter and volunteered however I was needed. Great job!!! Stay tuned for pictures!
Thanks a lot Staci for these important advices !
I agree with you about the media promotion and its role in the success of CLC programs.
That is what we will do in Montreal during the next months with CLC.

I had said that I would write again in May and then promptly forgot...my head was definitely elsewhere this month.
This blog is about offering some advice and wisdom gained through my experience as a YEC these last 5 months in Timmins...
I would say to all those in communities that don't have a whole lot of options when it comes to youth oriented organizations to partner with that you really need to create your own opportunities. Timmins is definitely not a hub for youth activity and when we first started, it seemed like an overwhelming and daunting task, but, after going down a few avenues that got us nowhere, we said, to heck with this, let's just go it alone.
Of course, we didn't end up alone, we developed some unlikely but extremely beneficial partnerships that helped us a lot along the way...Katimavik, our MP Charlie Angus, the Howard Johnson & Travelodge, the Timmins Public Library, etc. etc.
One thing I think we did extremely well was get the word out about what we were trying to do. We were definitely media hounds in times and managed to get ourselves in the local media 6 times in 5 months...definitely not bad. We worked our connections, wrote multiple press releases, weren't afraid to call in favours and plastered the town with our posters and information. Do this. It really helped our cause and made a great name for CLC in the town.
There were times of course when we were discouraged, when no or very few youth showed up, when our team fell apart a little bit, but the point is what you do with those set backs, how you continue to grow and how you move on. We did this pretty well I think, until the very end at least when unfortunately one member of our team decided they were no longer able to work with us.
This leads to my last point of advice - if you're working as a team, as our Timmins team was, be aware of what everyone is dealing with at any given time, continue to communicate as best you can, discuss workload and capabilities often and make sure your expectations make sense. Take the time to mentor and involve, but also to laugh and bond. And remember that there's a learning curve for everyone and that curve will present different needs and challenges.
I guess that's about it for the wisdom...I hope you all are enjoying you final few weeks of CLC Year 2!
It's been a pleasure and best of luck to everyone!
Hey team and friends of CLC!
The first day of the global gallery film fest and learnapolooza is here! I've been up since 7:00 in nervous anticipation. (Not to mention I went to bed at three). I have tested the technical equipment, which all CLCers know can be one of our greatest challenges and everything works great! We have a surround sound system generously donated to us for the weekend by Stefan Madansingh, a friend in Ottawa and a beautiful LCD projector lent to us by CHF Partners for Rural Development. I met with Ben Powless who will be co-facilitating our first workshop of the day, last night, right after he got in from Rome. I think we are all in really good shape. Today on the docket we have 2 workshops 4 films and an open forum tackling the topics of aboriginal rights, poverty in Canada and HIV/AIDS. I think we are really really going to do well. More to follow.
Hello TIG and CLC members,
Today was my last Change That Clicks workshop on Internet Safety in Dawson Community Center. The workshop lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes and focused on Cyber Security.
It went really well since the subject was relevant for all the participants (kids aged from 12 to 14). Rachel Levine-Katz, who works in Dawson Center, facilitated the workshop with me. Kym, an other Dawson Staff member, joined our workshop and joined TIG also !!
As an introduction, I asked the kids to log on the TIG Site, go to the Dawson Community Center group and read my last message relating to Change That Clicks. After that, I asked them to download the Powerpoint presentation (4th Workshop on Change That Clicks in the Documents folded) available on the Dawson page.
Then, I asked some relevant questions to the kids who appreciated this interactive way which makes easier the understanding of the key terms and concepts required to use safely the Internet or cyberspace.
The questions were like:
- Do you know what ICTs mean ?
Answer: Information and Communication Technologies
- Do you have an idea about some sort of crime infecting the Internet or cyber world today ?
Answer: Internet predators, cyber bullying, pornography, piracy, spam and identity theft.
- Do you know the number of hours spent by students online every week ?
Answer: According to i-SAFE America 2004 statistics, students, as many as 30 per cent spend between four and eight-plus hours online every week.
This answer surprised many of the participants who said that they spend two to three hours maximum on the web.
Finally, we took some pictures and I invited the kids and Dawson staff members to discover more the TIG website, ask me any questions they have and play educational games, an activity that they highly appreciated !
Last but not least, I updated the Dawson group.
In a nutshell, the workshop was FUN !
