Wow, time's flying! I have to say, working with TIG has been extremely overwhelming and hectic, but all worthwhile because it's very rewarding to finally see opportunities open up to youth in my community, not to mention, to finally see youth taking advantage of these opportunities.
I'm finding I love to do my monthly report because it makes me realize just how much we've accomplished, and it feels great! Just in the past week we've...
-Had our regular meeting
-Planned a workshop and open forum for next week
-Publicized them (English and French) as well as the Change that Clicks program
-Met with student council at my school about TIG/CLC
-Met with the local Young Liberals club about TIG/CLC
-Did a Guide to Action workshop with students from my school attending a Youth Forum Staci is organizing...
-Earlier this month we had our Climate Change workshop and I'm hearing back from people who are putting their ideas to action :D
It's going really well and I'm especially happy about being able to use my French language knowledge alot. I'm really happy to be part of a project that is providing bilingual services to our community, the way it should be!
I'm leaving for a missionary trip to Jamaica March 10th, so unfortunately I won't be there with Staci and Phil to run the Change That Clicks program, but I've been there for the planning and I think it'll turn out just fine :)
So month #2 with the Timmins Team? Success.
Hey Folks
Last week was very exciting, as the first week of the YouthPolitik program took place and was a resounding success. I am especially proud, because it was for this week that I, as a TakingITGlobal representative, had the opportunity to help design the Youth Politik sessions on Urban Sustainability.
It was a lot of fun - we had 60 highschool-age youth calculating out their ecological footprints, and then we had an open forum discussion on that acitvity. Then we (the City of Vancouver sustainability office team and I) broke up the groups into mini-groups which brainstormed different ways (both individually and as a society) that we could reduce our ecological footprints. It was a lot of fun, and a great start to the Youth Politik experience.
In April, we will start the activation phase, which is great because that's when we will use both the guides to action and tig project pages to have the youth begin their own project proposals. I can't wait!
The green tricampus workshops that I was planning with SYC are not likely to happen because we have not had muc feedback from the groups.
Monique and I both agree that this is probably due to the current and upcoming exam period.
But out of bad news comes good news. Moniq ue and I have started talking about including the CLC program as one of the topics/tracks in their upcoming national conference later this year. I think this will be awesome!
On Friday SYC was able to secure a project page on TIG and should have a greater Onatrio presence. YAY!
As per Juxtaposition I will be meeting with them next week.
I am also meeting with the students union chair and VP camps life next week to present TIG and the CLC program - to see if they will implement it in their internal networks - eventually encouraging the local campus groups to adopt it as well. (If you can't go from the grassroots up, go from the top down)
I am really excited about an upcoming event with OCIC. I have secured at U of T professor to speak at a breakfast meeting about progression in developing countries. Professor Rockel will speak about the history of African communities' own approach to development through environmental management.
Mai, Muneeb, Kiia and I are having a meeting this Friday to discuss a TO netorking meeting.
I have to admit that last week I lost momentum with the high school project but will be on it again at the beginning of next week.
Just had a great time at the Global Voices - Sharing our Vision conference hosted by our partner organization the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation. The conference started with a challenge to youth from the first keynote speaker LGen Romeo Dallaire. It was inspiring to hear his words and his recognition of NGOs being a key factor in enabling change. As Canadians he encouraged us to foster our skills in technology and strong work ethic to become activists and get involved in the field, our communities and in influencing policy.
The conference offered a variety of workshops to enable Albertans to come together and engage in meaningful dialogue on the Millennium Development Goals with locally-based NGOs and their partners from the Global South.
As a partner, TIG had the opportunity to set up a booth and talk with participants at the conference. Along with my host organization, Alberta's Youth VOLUNTEER!, we had sign up sheets for a future networking meeting and opportunities to do further TAKE ACTION workshops in schools and communities. We were very please to have participants sign up and I look forward to following up with these potential partners soon.
I hosted a workshop today entitled the Power of Youth and Technology: Inspiring, Informing and Involving Young People to Help Achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Along with Leslie (the ED of AYV!) and Kate (a youth board member on AYV!) we delivered an interactive workshop that had the 11 participants brainstorming together how we can engage youth in taking action on these goals. Wearing different "hats" (quite literally we had birthday hats!! hehe) the participants brainstormed how youth, mentors, NGOs and policy makers need to work together to meaningfully engage youth. The workshop ended with a sense that we need to foster collaboration through both offline and online networking. This will be enabled through a project page I have developed (http://projects.takingitglobal.org/abyouthmdg) and a local networking meeting that will be held in early March.
I am working with AYV! and the GEN practicum students to develop and implement a TAKE ACTION on the MDGs workshop. These networks will really help to create local connections with the youth that we work with to supportive organizations that want and have the capacity to support youth action.
I have a really exciting stakeholder meeting this week on environmental youth engagement that I will definitely be reporting about soon.
Hurray for networking!
JL
Hey all!
Yesterday I finished my first day of 'Change That Clicks,' and I'd say that things went really well! I will be doing 2 series; this first one consists of 8 12-13 year olds (and the next group will be 14-16 year olds). I'm hoping to get some pics loaded soon!
I am also preparing for an open forum for the Aboriginal youth in Miramichi entitled "Identity, Culture & Community: An Open Forum for First Nations Youth." Any suggestions or advice would be more than welcome!
That's all for now. If anyone has any questions or comments about anything, let me know!
