Hi!

So last Monday, March 2nd actually, I went into an East York Boys and Girls club to just sit in on the Change that Clicks workshop and see how it's going along. I was so impressed! The session had only four attendees and the facilitator informed me that they would have as many as 12 and as little as 3 depending on the day.

They were running the multiculturalism and diversity module that day, and it was really cool to see how well the facilitator interactd with the kids! She went through the powerpoint and the kids listened as though it was their favorite teacher in a classroom. It's been a long time since I've been around that age group (11-14) and their enthusiasm and energy was infectious! Afterwards, she assigned them an activity to do that included navigating the TIG website to find out about different countries, and it blew me away how comfortable they all were with the TIG site! They had step by step instructions on how to get to the specific country websites, but when it came to the Boys and Girls page or the discussion forums, they obviously knew what they were doing (most likely as a result of being trained on it before).

Everything ran really smoothly, and I came away impressed! A lot of it had to do with the facilitators' skils with getting along with the partcipants. It was one of the first times I actually first-hand witnessed a program that was creating a change, seeing as most of the kids in attendance were from difficult lives where they usually wouldn't encounter education on world issues, but given the change in this Change That Clicks setting, they were thriving!

Hello everyone,

This month, there was a lot of attending events because it seemed like a busy month for youth in Thunder Bay. I have a few key partnerships, the Regional Multicultural Youth Council, Dennis Franklin Cromarty high school, and Youthscape. One thing I am proud of is helping the youth research project "Mobilizing Minds" signed up and registered on to their project page. I gave them an orientation to how it operates and they have been using it.

For next month, I would like to host a youth safety forum during youth week, when youth who attended the last workshop put on by United Way can express there views about what needs to be done to create a safer community.

One challenge I am having is being involved in too many things, and not finding the time to regroup and plan to achieve the goals of Creating Local Connections. I am taking time tonight to refocus and set some goals for myself for the next few months. This is my time to address the needs that I have been observing within the skillset and resource I have.

I'm happy with that,

Pauline

This past month has really flown by in Ottawa for the CLC team. With things finally getting back to normal on the transit front it became a lot easier to meet with groups and to get back into our office with host partner YouCan. Events are happening more frequently and people are getting out to them. A lot of effort has been put on getting things set up as far as workshops over the next couple of months go as well as planning for the last live chat on national identity. I also did a social networking for social change and TIG training with Mothercraft Ottawa and some of their partners. This went really well and even Mothercraft's Executive Director attended most of it. The Ottawa team (Lynne and I) will be doing a social networking for social change workshop at the TYPS Conference coming up at the end of this month as well as doing a climate change guide to action and a social networking for social change workshop at the Jane Goodall Institute Roots and Shoots conference happening at the end of this month. With 4 SNFSC workshops in Ottawa, it seems like our little team team has found our niche.
This month I also had the opportunity to attend the IMPACT conference in Washington DC and to meet with some of our key partners from the past year to see where we should be concentrating our efforts over our last few months and opportunities for final collaborations. The biggest challenge I faced this month was in finding a balance between administrative and active duties, often finding myself bogged down in paperwork and forgetting about the world outside and the on the groups with youth work that I enjoy and that CLC needs. I think I'm finding a better balance now though. I'm really looking forward to all the workshops coming up and for getting to meet more young people from my community, so I think that will help tip the scales back away from paperwork.
Have a nice month,
Nikki

So somewhere along the way, I got lost on the TIG website. I just realized, while working on my monthly report, that I was posting things ONLY to my personal blog and not the CLC blog, so here are the links of what I've been writing about in February. It's got super-helpful tips:

a) Web 2.0 for Social Change Workshop:

b) Beyond Graduation- A New Online Community:

Also, I was in Washington, D.C. at the IMPACT conference on youth leadership and participation (which is the biggest national conference of its type) alongside Nikki and Muneeb. We intensively blogged about our learning and experiences so check it out!
