Title: Control Arms Campaign in Toronto
Location:
Categories: Human Rights Peace & Conflict Arms Control
Status:
In Progress
Timeline:
Ongoing
Description:
Lack of controls on the arms trade is fuelling conflict, poverty and human rights abuses worldwide. Every government is responsible. The Control Arms campaign is asking governments to toughen up controls on the arms trade.
Control Arms is a joint initiative of Amnesty International, International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), and Oxfam International.
Background:
“Without strict control, such weapons will continue to fuel violent conflict, state repression, crime, and domestic abuse. Unless governments act to stop the spread of arms, more lives will be lost, more human rights violations will take place, and more people will be denied the chance to escape poverty… Urgent measures are needed immediately. Governments need to take action at every level, from communities to the international arena, to stop this suffering.”
Objectives:
Our Million Faces petition is collecting photos and self portraits from around the world to reach our goal of one million faces by June 2006. We will use these faces to send a powerful, global message of support to the world's governments for an International Arms Trade Treaty.
Milestones:
Last month we launched the 100 days of action, a global effort to raise awareness on arms transfers which help supply weapons that have fueled violent conflict affecting people world wide.
Needs:
Be one in a million. Join us today.
