United World Colleges Costa Rica: An Introduction

United World Colleges (UWC) is the only global educational movement which brings together students from all over the world at pre-university level (or tertiary level in the case of one College), regardless of their ability to pay. Students are selected on merit and live together in an environment designed to foster international understanding, tolerance and peace. Today there are ten United World Colleges across the world, each with students from many different countries and cultures.

The United World Colleges international movement is currently represented by volunteer UWC National Committees and Selection Contacts in 115 countries. Through the United World Colleges (International), the UWC National Committee of Costa Rica is recognized as a non-profit legal entity, enjoys an operational partnership with UNESCO and has a consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Due to its relatively small size, the committee has traditionally dedicated all of its efforts to implementing a genuinely competitive selection process to identify some of the best students in Costa Rica. Since 1984, more than 50 young people from various backgrounds and from all parts of the country have been able to benefit from an opportunity to study at UWC colleges regardless of their ability to pay. As the UWC alumni community in Costa Rica grows however, there is a mounting recognition for a need to do more than just that.

Objectives:
Currently, efforts to consolidate the organization and increase the profile of United World Colleges in Costa Rica include a series of strategic planning meetings aiming to identify, conceive, design and implement a broad array of projects. The overall goal is to bring the UWC experience and spirit to Costa Rica so that many more people can learn about and become involved in the movement. The projects will include, among others, community service activities, public debates and meetings on pertinent issues in Costa Rica and globally, nature conservation projects and other educational activities to enhance civic engagement and foster a sense of social, political and environmental responsibility among young people in Costa Rica.

The UWC National Committee of Costa Rica is currently seeking to identify and develop partnerships with like-minded organizations and to support educational activities of governmental agencies and corporate social responsibility programs of private companies. Such partnerships will additionally help increase the profile of United World Colleges in Costa Rica and permit mobilization of financial resources for organizational growth and scholarships to enable even more young Costa Ricans to study at UWC Colleges in the coming years.

Needs:
The ongoing discussions about the future work of the UWC National Committee of Costa Rica will culminate in an event entitled
