In keeping with their “Tru Mission” to bring music to young hospital patients fighting life-threatening diseases, on January 10th, 2006, the cast of The Difference Music Makes will present a live holiday performance at The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. Young hospital patients will receive musical gift bags with music CDs, personal CD players and a variety of small gifts. This performance will be dedicated to the memory of Alex Sasseville. Alex was a patient at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital before losing his battle with cancer, at the all too young age of thirteen. Alex’s brother Jake Sasseville has founded the Xander Foundation hoping to honor Alex’s memory by providing support for children with cancer. Past performances for the cast of The Difference Music Makes have included the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth/Hitchcock in NH, The San Diego Children’s Hospital in CA and The St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in TN.

Founded in 2002 by, then 15 year old, New Hampshire resident, Laura Corlin, "The Difference Music Makes Series" is a 501c-3 non-profit community service project created primarily to provide young hospital patients with the gift of music during treatment for cancer and other life-threatening diseases. To date, over $30,000 in music CDs, CD players and financial contributions for medical research, and live performances have been delivered to children’s hospital facilities coast to coast in the United States and overseas in Dublin, Ireland. With every printing of 1,000 music CDs, 500 copies are donated to children in hospital wards. Volume I, named "The Difference Music Makes," is a solo album of favorite children’s songs, recorded and independently produced by Laura Corlin. Volumes II and III are compilation albums performed by a cast of 15 extremely gifted recording artists, ages 10 through 21. All independently produced by Ms. Corlin, the cost of manufacturing the CDs has been self-funded by the young artists themselves, sales of their music CDs, and through fund raising efforts supported by the general public and sponsor contributions from area businesses!

Supported by The StarMight Foundation, the project goals include:
1. Provide young patients with music and its “healing benefits,” during treatment periods and long hospital stays and personal CD players for them to listen to the music on.
2. Provide mentor and education programming that offer youth volunteer service opportunities, leadership experiences and action planning programs that youth can use to bring this service program into their communities and hospital wards.
3. Raise funds for the research of life-threatening pediatric diseases through sales of the Music CD Children’s Series called "The Difference Music Makes."
4. Provide a vehicle for professional musicians and storytellers to join in the sharing of their art with children receiving hospital treatments.
Photographs and interviews available upon request. Please contact the StarMight office at 603-664-9983 or e-mail at starmightfoundation@hotmail.com.

Mr. Sadler met Ms. Corlin in Washington, DC when she was awarded the Blair Sadler International Arts in Healthcare Scholarship in 2004. Four out of the twelve cast members accepted Mr. Sadler’s invitation and at their own expense, flew across the county during their February vacation. During their visit to the hospital, the cast members received a tour of the facility and provided two live performances right in the children’s ward. Patient’s arrived on foot, in wheel chairs and even in their hospital beds, which were rolled into the area. Family members and hospital staff filled the room to capacity and spilled out into the hallway. Each singer provided a selection of solo performances that included both inspirational and upbeat song selections. An impromptu acappella compilation by all four singers ended the show to a huge round of applause. At the conclusion of each performance the cast members visited with the patients and their families and distributed the Difference Music Makes gift bags, The 50 gift bags included music CDs produced and recorded by the young Difference Music Makes singers, as well as, CDs donated by professional musicians including Grammy Award winner Kenny Loggins, NAPPA Award winner Sherry Kondor, Carol King’s youngest daughter, and NH’s own Parent’s Choice Award Winners Steve Blunt & Ellen Edson. Youth Venture is a national nonprofit organization that is empowering a movement of young people who are shaping their communities and world. Youth Venture is dedicated to providing opportunities for young people (ages 12-20) to create, lead, and manage "ventures" -- clubs, organizations, or businesses -- that create some form of social good, contributing positively to the community. Among the broad range of supports that Youth Venture provides to help young people create and launch ventures is start-up grant funding. The New Hampshire office of Youth Venture just opened in Spring 2004. Ventures can be anything that young people dream up--from a club at their school which they feel is needed, to organizing a hot-line for kids who are being bullied, to creating a business fixing cars for a reduced fee for lower-income people... it can be anything that kids can imagine, connecting their interests and skills with the needs they see in their communities.

The StarMight Foundation will be hosting a Youth Venture Workshop in the spring of 2005 to lead other NH Youth towards fulfilling their dreams of starting their own Youth Venture.
