Description:
WOCRIC is an Information and communication initaitive centre, set-up to empower women, children and youths in rural and semi urban areas of calabar south with ICT, and to offer free computer/internet training for women, children and youths.rnWe welcome, donation, volunteers and some ICT facilities to enhance learning.

Background:
Edem’s Children Foundation (ECF) understands the power and roles communication channels have to play in educating women, girl child from all background, who due to their circumstances may not have access to information and computers technology. In response to this emerging trend, ECF has opened the first phase of Women and Children’s Rights Information Centre (WOCRIC) in semi-urban area of Calabar South Local Government for women, children, youths and dis-advantaged adults to promote equal access to communication channels.rnrnThe centre would provide spaces for internet access as well as hands-on-training for women, youths and children to enable them utilise modern information and communication and technologies to improve their lives.rnrnAccording to the Chair of ECF Board of Directors Comrade Edem Edem, the goal of the project is to support the development of women, youths and children, as well as reduce the high rate of human rights violation through the information, communication and technology facilities.rnrnThe activities of the centre as explained by the Programme Director Ms Fiona Ita Ekpo, the centre’s activities will include:rnrn Collection of information in the subject areas of human rights, women and children rights, arrest, detention, refugees, capital punishment, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and freedom of media.rn Collation of international instruments, national legislations, court documents, questionnaire, reports, leaflets, letters, media reports and books on women and children’s rights.rn Classification and recording into computer worksheets according to thematic and geographic areas.rn Conduct and publish occasional investigative reports on women and children’s rights abuses.rn Conduct counselling for parents and children.rn Campaign to solicit local, national and international support to stop the violation of women and children’s rights.rn Provision of helpline where victims of rights based violence could call to reach ECF for help.rn Training of women, youths and children on computer and the use of internet (ICT).rnThe organisation thanked the Board of Directors for financing/supporting the project, and has also called on other donors and international organisations to support this project., as the second phase of the project is billed to commence soon in terms of expanding to other local communities in rural and semi-urban areas of Cross River State.

Objectives:
The goal of the project is to support the development of women, youths and children, as well as reduce the high rate of human rights violation through the information, communication and technology facilities

Milestones:
We intent to training 50 women, children and youths from poor rural families in the first phase, which will end in Feb, 2009
