Description:
The idea is simple - we want to encourage marginalized communities to improve their livelihoods by providing them access to a worldwide market via the Internet.
We do that by building a web-based platform that connects community-based sellers to a socially-conscious market. These online stores can be set up and managed by the communities themselves, and Elevyn works closely with NGOs and field partners on training, consultancy and advisory.
Background:
Why?
Unique crafts are dying out each day, while communities in rural areas struggle between the rapid transition from subsistence-based livelihoods to cash economy.
Elevyn was built because the team was inspired by the struggle of the indigenous peoples in this predicament. As a start-up company working with small grants – the team is trying to offer as many communities the opportunity to trade online by sending field coordinators to the field to speak to field partners or give an introduction to the community.
One of the problems is the high margins that middle men get from selling crafts, in some cases, only about 6% goes back to the maker, keeping them in poverty cycle.
Objectives:
1. To raise the income level of marginalized artisans, we intend to transfer at least 75% of the selling price of handicrafts back to the makers.
2.Through the sales of these crafts, 5% will be channeled to social economic projects in the community, like better schools.
Milestones:
1. To connect with 125 marginalized artisans in the next 6 months
2. To see actual increase in the income levels of these artisans because of Elevyn.com
