Description:
Youth Empowerment Programme - Tuchangamke Mtaani (YEP!) is an international network of volunteers who support local initiatives in Nairobi, Kenya. We recognize the invaluable potential of community-driven development and strive to effectively act as a facilitator and propelling partner in these grassroots efforts. The organization is steered by interns, serving three to six month terms, at the United Nations in Nairobi. Each new cycle of interns brings new team members, innovative ideas, fresh energy, and an ever-growing network of resources.
Background:
YEP! Tuchangamke Mtaani (meaning "Lets Unite in the Hood" in Kiswahili) started in August 2005 when some UN interns were taken to see the Mathere Community Education and Development Organization (MCEDO) school by some friends from the Mathare Valley, the 2nd biggest slum in Nairobi, Kenya. Founded in 2001 by Mathare residents, the school currently provides primary education to over 190 children, of whom one third are orphans and one third come from single parent families. On their first visit, the interns were struck by the classroom and living conditions of these students and decided they shoud do something to help. They began by assisting in lessons on Friday afternoons, a project that YEP! still continues today.
Objectives:
Since then, the UN interns, with the help of some UN staff members and Mathare residents have developed a number of other projects including initiating and supporting the World Food Programme's (WFP) School Feeding Programme at MCEDO; a bamboo planting project for ecological restoration, improving sanitation and income generation; and economic stability initiatives such as toilet and shower facilities and a small business centre.
