Description:
Varosa (Famagusta) is a city in the island of Cyprus that is part of the areas occupied by Turkey since its military invasion in 1974. The tragic pecularity of Varosha is that it is a ghost-town (i.e. it has not been settled by Turkey, it remains as it was in 1974).
Its Greek Cypriot inhabitants who had achieved great prosperity until 1974 were displaced from their town and are still so. A plethora of UN Security Council has called for the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the island and for the return of Famagusta, amongst other matters, but to no avail.
CYSO ISCHYS (GYAN member) is a youth NGO running a petition for the return of Varosha to its lawful inhabitants, 33 years after they were forced to flee their town.
